Downfall/Der Untergang. - Deleted Scene. - Krebs negotiates with Soviets. (Original translations.)

General Krebs of the withering Wehrmacht tries a last ditch attempt at negotiating with Soviet general Chuikov.

One of my favorite scenes in cinema, combining elements of humor, consequence and pragmatism into one, well thought out entity. A real shame it wasn't included in the final cut.

Unfortunately, 12 year olds armed with editing software have turned this brilliant scene (as much as the entire movie Downfall) into their nonsensically translated meme abominations. I figured there might be people who genuinely want to know what is happening here instead of trying to not die from cringe.

BTW, the guy who was shoved into that closet was Matvei Isaakovich Blanter. He wrote Katyusha, basically THE Russian war song.

-Hitler committed suicide.
-We were aware of that.
-Seems unlikely. Actually he is in Argentina.
-We were also aware of that.

“In 60 years they gonna make a movie about us”
Zhukov: “we were aware of that”

Damn Russian with a German accent sounds scary. Krebs’ actor is so good in this.

The Germans politely offering conditional surrender "White peace" at this point are like the Black Knight in Monty Python. No arms and no legs, unable to fight, "Alright, we'll call it a draw"

Krebs: “The subtitle writer mistakenly wrote “Crimea” instead of “Kremlin””
Chuikov: “We were aware of that”.

I can't imagine having the grim task of negotiating a surrender to the nation you invaded.

As a Russian, I'm very impressed how good the German actor speaks Russian. Usually in Hollywood movies, when actors speak Russian it's so bad you can't even understand them. But here he speaks clear and good Russian with slight German accent. Bravo.

Here's a fun fact: the guy who was shoved into the closet was Russian composer Matvey Blanter, who wrote the song Katyusha, which plays at the end of this video. Also, he passed out and fell out of the closet just as the German delegation was about to leave.

I love how Chuikov's just nervously nod along whenever Chuikov sorta-kinda-subtly hints that they should do so.  It makes me feel like this is a regular occurrence.

"Would you have signed this treaty under similar circumstances"

I find this to be a really powerful statement as everyone knew damn well the germans would've been merciless to them had they won the war.

General Chuikov. 3 years ago he was in a bunker in Stalingrad, 50 meters from the frontline, relentlessly shelled and commanding the remnants of his 62nd Army to make a desperate stand to hold the city.

Now he's in Berlin.

guard: "the german delegation is here"
chuikov: "anyone i know?"
guard: "one of them looks like krebs"
chuikov: "hide the maps, i don't want him spending ten hours pointing on it, give us five minutes, distract him with some fish in the meantime."
