Dr. Jessica Shellock, a spine surgeon on the medical staff at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery, talks about the common spine condition, a herniated disc. A herniated disc occurs when the inner part of the disc pushes out and pinches on the spinal nerves. This can cause leg or arm pain, muscle weakness or numbness or tingling in the extremities. A herniated disc can be treated in a variety of ways including physical therapy, medication, and surgical intervention like laminectomy/discectomy, artificial disc replacement, endoscopic spine surgery or spinal fusion.
