I like to be comfortable when backpacking. Here is a complete gear list with all the items I bring on trips when prioritizing comfort. This list is great if you're going on a shorter trip, setting up a base camp, or just want to prioritize comfort when camping!

Great review of your gear. You definitely have it dialed it. My only recommendation would be put your headlamp in your fanny pack whenever you're exploring. I'm with search and rescue in Arizona. God forbid something happens when you're away from camp. You're easy to find at night from the air if you have a light source. We've had a lot of searches that would have taken 20 minutes had the person has a light source.

HUGE kudos! This is great!

You're Comfort Carry list at <6 kg is coming in a couple kilos less than my current set up - LOTS of great ideas and suggestions here. Many thanks.

Gorgeous backdrop BTW...

Cheers!

I just got the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT sleep pad and did my first trip with it last weekend. I have never slept so well in a tent, that thing is super comfy!

I LOVE that you are doing things like comfort and non Zpacks type gear on your channel. There is so much cheaper, good quality light gear around now that it's great to let people know, many thanks, loving's the channel. G'day from Australia.

Great stuff! thanks. Getting set for a long hike along Appalachian Trail. Last big hike I did was in the Appalachians, with an Army buddy and our sons. I was carrying 40 lbs - and thought I was lite!!! LOL He was carrying nearly 70. At age 16 we did a hike on Isle Royale for 2 weeks. I weighed 110 lbs and carried 45!

I have the exact same CNOC/Sawyer squeeze water filtration setup and have found it to be absolutely perfect! Nice to know I'm on to something there.

Look mat you go!!! Your channel is doing great man!!! I'm pumped for you! I don't care what anyone says, I'm a fan of the fanny pack! Awesome backdrop. I am still working on dropping weight. The light weight mentality is very new to me still.

Damn, this is exactly what my gear loadout is slowly becoming. I already have the dig dig, spoon, chair, and a two person tent!

since you're a multi-season backpacker and have experience with a lot of pads, it would be interesting to see a video explaining how to choose gear for warmth. For example, is it better to pack an extra warm base layer, or to have a higher R-value pad? How valuable are hats/balaclava, gloves, and booties/socks while sleeping? Does a reflective material as the footprint help? What about liners?

The ultimate comfort item (especially for solo hikers) that almost nobody owns/brings is some video glasses. I got some for about $200 on ebay. Its called Vision 800, and they kinda sucks, but it only weighs 95g, is relatively compact, it runs android operating system, has about the same resolution as a DVD, and it has support for stereoscopic 3D videos. The things that sucks are mainly the ram/internal memory and battery life. Forget installing apps on this, or else your videos will lag (i got *only* VLC installed on mine, and even this seems to be pushing it). The battery life is about an hour, so *barely* enough for watching three 20 minute episodes of your favorite tv series, but not enough for movies. Also, charging creates a really annoying sound in the earbuds, so it is not possible to watch videos while charging from a battery bank (unless they fixed this issue on newer models). But at least it only takes maybe 45minutes to charge the small battery, so if you watch half a movie, and then make some food, you can watch the rest when you are finished eating. Being an entertainment addict, this thing removes almost all my symptoms of homesickness.

How is your "comfort" load lighter and smaller than some people's regular thru-hike load? lol

Great video Justin! I'm happy to see you bringing the Helinox chair - I have the same one and it goes with me on every trip from now on. Now I don't feel so bad bringing it along. LOL!

Whoaaa!! One question:
How on earth did you film that shot st the end?? Where the camera was still in the tent but outside the inner tent looking in on you??
Amazing!!
Also I really loved the video! Was great! But for me the luxury items are going to be, my coffee maker Wacaco minipresso gr (600g~) and I have heavier things like the S2S alpha pot 2.1 which is a two person put with bowls, cups and sleeves!! Love that Ingenious pot!! And then I want to buy for my ultra luxury stuff: a compact shower!! Also from STS! And a 10 L bucket!! So I can have water and not have to constantly run to the river! 😊😊😄
Now THOSE are essential to me! Lol 😆😝

Cool gear items ! I’m considering a chair after coming back from my first trip of season. I always thought it was a over kill item but as the years go on I think my body would thank me lol.

This Base Weight is over 15 lbs.

We'll put aside the "should the fanny pack be included or is it worn weight" debate for now. The Base Weight is generally accepted to be everything you're carrying with the exception of consumables and worn clothes.

Making some very conservative estimates about the weight of your various stuff sacks, ditty bag, first aid kit, TP/Soap, Ditty/Keys/Cards, Lighter/Towel/Canister, Fleece, Toque, Base Layer Bottoms, Extra Underwear, Extra socks, and Down Jacket you're leaving out over 2 lb (around 35oz) in the weight you claim this kit comes in at. I'm not including your phone or bear spray either as you mentioned to others you left out of the weight, but they should be included too.

I get that this is a comfort set up, but if you're going to mention the base weight it should be correct. It would be interesting to see the actual weight you see for the backpack, frog togs, and Ursack, their manufacturer weights are higher than what you mentioned.
