With a very similar design using a differential and ratchets, I used one Lego Mindstorms motor (turning left or right) to turn two different mechanisms (but only in one direction). With this I could aim and fire a toy gun with one motor, which freed up an extra motor for driving the whole thing around

Is this similar to the mechanism that mechanical watches use because the counterweight moves both ways but the spring only winds in one direction?

I have a set of ratchet straps that claims it clamps down in both directions, guessing this is how they did it.

They're annoying, by the way, as it makes it harder to plan your lockout position.
