Input: blue slider of two-way linear motion.
Output: yellow crankshaft to which a yellow flywheel and a cam are fixed.
The blue slider, green connecting rod and the yellow crankshaft create a slider crank mechanism.
For the slider crank mechanism with a driving slider, a means must be provided to overcome dead positions (when the crank and connecting rod are in line). Here, the inertia of the flywheel takes care of that.
However, if the mechanism stops in dead positions, inertia will have no effect when the mechanism restarts. To overcome this problem, a device of yellow cam and red spring pin is added. The red pin pushes the crankshaft to prevent it from stopping in dead positions. This is important when the mechanism is arranged in the horizontal plane (see first two scenes of video).
In the case of the mechanism arranged in the vertical plane, such a device is not required. Instead, an eccentric is fixed to the crankshaft to ensure that the mechanism never stops in a dead position (see last two scenes of video).
