Spanish Accent Marks Rules (How to use them)

Accent marks in Spanish are very important because they show how words are pronounced. Accents point out emphasis. Each word in Spanish contains an accent, a syllable that is stressed, but these don't always have to be marked with an accent mark. With this lesson you will learn the rules on why and where to place accents.

There are different types of accents in Spanish
-Acento prosódico
-Acento ortográfico
-Acento diacrítico

-Acento prosódico
Es la mayor intensidad con la que pronunciamos una sílaba dentro de una palabra.
(It is the highest intensity with which we pronounce a syllable within a word)

-Acento ortográfico
Es el símbolo qué colocamos encima de una vocal. For example á, ñ, ü
(It is the symbol that we place on top of a vowel.)

There are different types of acentos ortográficos:

• Tilde (a type of acento ortográfico) es el símbolo gráfico qué usamos para mostrar dónde tenemos
que acentuar la sílaba dentro de una palabra.
for example: á,é, í, ó, ú
(is the graphic symbol that we use to show where we have to stress the syllable within a word)

• Diéresis: Signo de ortografía que se coloca sobre la vocal u de las sílabas gue y gui cuando aquella debe pronunciarse.
pingüino (pinguin)
cigüeña (stork)
(two dots placed on the vowel u of the syllables gue and gui. This symbol tell you how the syllable must be pronounced)

• virguliña ~ por ejemplo ñ

-Acento diacrítico
Lo usamos para diferenciar 2 palabras qué se escriben iguales, pero tienen significados diferentes.
(We use it to differentiate 2 words that are spelled the same, but have different meanings)
