I lived in Radstadt until the age of 10. Among ourselves, we kids spoke "Dialekt". With my parents and in school, it was "High" German. Then one day, I said something to my mother in "Dialekt"and she did not understand me. Years later I spent 5 days in Vienna and had no language problems. I am writing this because I never noticed these differences. In "Dialect" I said "hob", but in class I said "habe".

In 1979 when I was 20 I started to learn German having fallen in love with a Welserin whom I met at the University of London, Royal Holloway College. After two weeks touring West Germany including West Berlin, I crossed the border into Upper Austria. Wow, what a difference from standard German. Ever since then I have tried to maintain the ability to be “bilingual” in German, ie Kaiserdeutsch and Austrobayerisch. I just realized that I picked up the Austrian pronunciation (or lack thereof XD) of the R without realizing (I live in Graz). I speak standard or almost hoch deutsch (German is my 3rd language) but I would never pronounce the R in Wirt, Bart oder Berlin.

Wow, this is so cool that you are teaching this. I travel to Vienna about every 18 months or so because I love the architecture, vibe and cuisine. I remember some very basic German from a high school German course of one year which was many years before you were born, but it is not enough when I want to chat. And I realize now that even if I had continued my studies well in to university German, I would still not understand Viennese! Oh well.

I think the first tip is extremely helpful, but what I noticed most as an exchange student in Wien was the "ei" difference. It sounded more like a Southern US dialect, pronounced /a/. So "weit" was pronounced more like /waat/. I assume you do another video covering this, so I am going to look for it. Danke!

Strange. I would consider the R sound more harsh in Austria. Look at Falco Sounds. The R is so substantially vocalized.

hey, ich finds cool, dass du tutorials zu österreichischem deutsch machst, weil da gibt es bisher ja eher wenig. Allerdings würd ich dir raten, die englischen Wörter nachzuhören, weil die Aussprache leider nicht verständlich ist (zb Vowel).
