5 TIPS TO SOUND LIKE A NATIVE SPEAKER

Показать описание
American English pronunciation is not just the way native speakers pronounce words, it's the way they pronounce phrases - connect words, insert sounds, omit some letters at all.

Methods from this video:
1. Linking
Words are connected to gather and sound like one long word. You need to understand how it works so you can sound more American and understand what people say
The last sound in one word is linked to the first sound in another word
When two consonants are together, we don’t pronounce these consonants, we link them together
This school - this school
Big elephant - bigelephant
Run away - runaway
A fine name
Good day
Good boy
I want that orange – thadorange
I want this orange – thisorange

2. Intrusion
When two vowels come together, we sometimes Hera an extra Y or W sound between them
When the first word ends with sounds -iy, -ey, -ay, -oy, y sound comes in between the two words
He asked – Heyasked
Three apples - threeyapples
When the first word ends with -uw, -ow, -aw, then w sound comes in Between the two words
Do it – Dewit
Go out – Gowout

A good example with both of the rules that I’ve mentioned:
At the end of the movie, we’ll all go out

3. Elision
Elision is when a sound disappears
Next door – Nexdoor

4. Assimilation
Assimilation means two sounds blend together, forming a new sound altogether. This often happens with t and j which make ʧ and with d and j which make ʤ.
For example:
Don’t you — donʧu
Won’t you — wonʧu
Meet you — meeʧu
Did you — diʤu
Would you — wuʤu

5. geminates are like twins — two same sounds back-to-back. Often when one word ends with the same letter as the beginning of the next word, you should connect the two words in your speech.
For example:
Social life – socialife
Good day

I wanted to watch this video because i've watched so many videos on how to have a British accent that I wanted to see a video on how to sound American (I am American and I speak English). As a native English speaker watching this video, I think this is absolutely amazing! I don't even realize i'm doing half the things you're talking about but I actually am! I'm sorry we are so annoying with our rules and crazy sounds. If I wasn't a native English speaker, I don't think I would ever be able to master English so for all of you out here learning, YOU'RE ALL DOING AMAZING! I appreciate you wanting to know/learn our language and learn more about our amazing cultures we have within English (American (which is super diverse in itself!), British, Australian, etc.)! We appreciate you and you are doing more than I ever could!!! ❤️❤️❤️🎉🎉🎉

I am from England and you are spot on with every point. The only time you don't join words, is when you want to emphasise something, or make a point of something. For example if you went to school and there was a big elephant there, you would say "big, elephant, in this, school". Just one thing though Marina, your pronunciation is great but you struggle with the word "Vowel" - you say it as "Wowel" but the first letter is a solid "V". It confused me at first, so thought I would just politely point it out. Great video and will be very useful to many people learning real English, instead of just "text book" English. Well done.

As a American I found much of this video to be very insightful, seeing as how many of these pronunciations are second nature. I would point out the section including don't you, won't you, meet you, etc was a little off because although some people do speak this way it is a very informal type of pronunciation and would be looked down upon by some especially depending on the circumstance in which you used it.
