A trick I do. Imagine people were trying to write down the words you were saying. Say them slow enough so that the person can write down any of the words you are saying.

Talking slower will often lower the voice a bit. For some people (with a bad habit of speaking in a high-pitch voice, which can be very annoying), this can make it much more pleasant for the listeners.

I think many people tend to attribute value to words, but no value silence.
i.e. i need to keep talking for my idea to be expressed well.
Now i try to consider silence and pauses as having equal or sometimes even more value than the words and try to include them when public speaking.
It also actually helps me relax.

This video is quite good, especially if you watch it at x2 speed.

Another reason people talk fast is theyre afraid they'll be interrupted, which, if they pause, they usually are.

I have learnt how to speak properly when I started my YT channel, reading script and recording yourself is the best practice :) then watch those old videos to see the improvement.

In my view you can speak quickly and maintain good understanding and comprehension for your audience. It’s a fine line and tough to do, but I think a great example is David Rubenstein. He talks pretty fast but his speaking and ideas flow well and his tone of voice and body language demonstrates a sense of control rather than rushing. No stuttering or back tracking for corrections because of a cerebral rushing just as much a verbalisation rush. Comprehension is not lost and a brief slowing down allows him to emphasise important points in his more effectively than most people because of his faster yet flowing style.

Like you, I grew up in South Africa, and I am amazed at how speaking ability has deteriorated over the years. I have trouble understanding many younger folks these days. In particular, YouTubers who try to "impart information" (eg. Ben Schapiro) and speak at such a fast rate, that there is no time to consider what they say. Another related habit that infuriates me to such an extent that I turn them off, is the rapid fire of words with no "sense pauses' which indicate the end of a sentence or thought concept, The worst stream right through the end on one sentence and pause midway through the next. Keep up the good work.

I have always talked too fast
Years ago I had a test for ADD. I was mid 60s and knew my brain worked differently.
Sure enough the psychologist found part of my brain in overdrive, and my speech reflected that.
I now practice meditation and that has vastly improved my thoughts and speech pace.
As well, i practice silent power.

As a non-native English speaker, I recommend this method to improve pronunciation and vocabulary level... those tenths of second will allow you to step up the overall level of your speech....

My best advice : practice your presentation orally. In addition to assessing the actual length, I'm always surprised to see where I get stuck in my words !

It's worth the effort because it makes a presentation at least 10 times better 😛

And don't forget, keep the audience attention ! Ask questions, don't too serious, indicate your limits, etc.
