How Do VA Benefits Work with Medicare? Medicare for Veterans EXPLAINED! 🇺🇸

In today's video, Marvin from Medicare School is breaking down exactly how VA Benefits work with Medicare, and how if you are a Veteran 65 or older, what Medicare package is right for you, what benefits or opportunities you received as a Veteran with medicare, and exactly how medicare works for those who served in the military.

Marvin will also explain how Medicare works through the VA system for military and veterans and the timeline and steps necessary to sign up for Medicare as a veteran.

For example, through the VA, Military veterans aren't required to take Medicare Part B, but in doing so, you can only add part b medicare in the future during the general enrollment period which is only the first 3 months of the year, and for every 12 months you go without Medicare part b, you'll acquire a 10% penalty on your part b premium once it's added to your medicare package and this is a lifetime penalty, meaning even if you were to wait just one year before adding medicare part b, you'd have to pay the additional 10% fee roughly an extra $33 per month for the rest of your life!

Marvin also discusses Tricare for life and what that means for veterans over the age of 65 and their medicare, who accepts Tricare for life, and what Tricare for life covers!

Lastly, Marvin discusses using a Medicare Advantage plan ONLY, if you're a VA or Tricare, you don't have to have a prescription plan, do inpatient and outpatient only, and rely on the VA or Tricare for life for prescription medicines.

There is free hearing aids and eye exams if you have VA health care. No dental for most.

Your "How Do VA Benefits Work with Medicare?" video really helped me understand what I should do. I am 100% service-connected VA disabled, permanent and total. I get all my healthcare free from VA facilities or through VA's "community care." I am 63 and drawing Social Security retirement early. When I turn 65 I will do Medicare A&B, get my meds through VA, and I can get my outpatient healthcare from civilians under Part B, or through VA. My wife is 62 and still working. She will get her CHAMPVA card when she approaches 65. At that point she will do Medicare A&B, get her meds through VA, and CHAMPVA will be secondary payer. The only questions I still have is ...who will pay our Medicare Part B premiums?

The other problem if you don't sign up for a traditional Medicare Supplement right when you are eligible, is that you have to go through the underwriting process. At that point, the companies are not required to insure you, and even if they do, can charge you a higher premium.

Good video very very bad idea to not get Medicare part B. Trying to coordinate medication‘s from two different healthcare systems is impossible. I’m a retired navy nurse, and I also worked at the Veterans administration several years before fully retiring. Do not think that you can have your meds filled by the VA for prescription written by an outside doctor, that’s not gonna happen. I am 100% disabled veteran, although my meds can’t be purchased for free by the Veterans administration, I have a separate primary care manager at the veterans administration. Who does those medications for me.

I only have VA. I think Medicare costs way too much for lower into Vets who can’t afford 170 per month. I am grateful I have VA.

I am 86 and have not had part b since I was 78 . All my Medical is covered thru the VA on a Community Care status . VA has always approved all the non VA hospital and Non Va ph to include all tests and consults et al in which the V A picks up the entire tab - no cost to me . VA covers all but preventive dental . My annual out of pocket dental averages 500 ( 2-3 visits for cleaning ) Essentially the VA covers all but dental and about 10 percent of my scripts . I am saving over 2000 annually . Check it out !

I’m 100% VA and SSDI with Medicare. VA gives glasses, hearing aids and dental. Far as my understanding on prescriptions VA does fills only VA docs and docs that VA has sent me to. I don’t think they’ll cover meds for outside doctors that they haven’t approved for me to go? Not a 100% sure but that’s my understanding. I can go to civilian emergency rooms and notify VA within 72 hours and VA will cover. I’ve been using VA for several years and they have been exceptional in my care and refer me to doctors of my choice as long as the doctors accepts VA payments. I appreciate your video. She’d some light on questions I had about Medicare. Thanks

Thank you for your videos, I am a Medicare agent/broker and have learned a lot watching your videos; not all MA plans coordinates well with TriCare for life. Had a client disenrolled from the MA plan because of coordination issues.

In the VA system, t he community care option let's Veterans see a civilian specialist doctor when VA does not have that particular specialist service

VHA is pretty versatile with its ability to contract for services in the private sector

As a vet with VA benefits, I will not do a MA plan due to HMO and PPO, plus needing authorizations!

VA dental is only available to those if they have a dental disability or those rated at 100% disabled.

Thank you for your information. Am certain I made the right choice by keeping my Medicare A & B and keeping my TCL as my supplemental insurance. Too bad Social Security doesn’t provide the same quality of information as you do. You get two thumbs up from me!
