Are Doctors Smart? IQ by Profession

Did you know that the average IQ varies significantly by profession? Here are the smartest professionals, as demonstrated by the scientific literature.

Intelligence quotient, or IQ, is a standardized test of scoring human intelligence. It's not perfect, but it is highly reliable, although it omits other valid and important forms of intelligence, like social intelligence or creative intelligence. Nevertheless, it's interesting to see how intelligence various in larger populations, such as between certain professions.

We'll also explore how important intelligence (or rather one's IQ score) is to other outcomes, such as money, wealth, income, and lifetime happiness and satisfaction.

As a doctor myself, i'm surprised physicians scored so high on average on IQ tests compared to other professions. I see most doctors as hard workers rather than intellectually brilliant. I see mathematicians/ physicists as those who are intellectually gifted for the most part.

I don't think I have the highest IQ. I can't just cram information overnight and gets As on tests like some people do. I have worked hard my whole life, and I am proud of that.

My dad is an anesthesiologist and he told me once “I’m not the smartest person in the world, but in medical school I had the ability to just keep my nose to my books and study really hard, and that’s how I became a doctor.” I think it’s more about hard work and medicine is almost more like a trade than an intellectual pursuit. With that being said, my grandfather was a general surgeon and he was an absolute genius. He read probably tons of books and extremely quickly, and had an eidetic memory. He knew everything about science, history, etc. he was just overall very very smart.

I wonder how the average IQ of data scientists, programmers and other individuals in the IT field would compare to this list. I feel like they may rank pretty high because the majority of their work is logic and pattern based which is one of the main things the IQ test tests.

on the IQ correlating with wealth bit, I think it's important to see whether the wealth was self-accumulated or passed to the person. Say a self-made billionaire's wealth is obviously of different quality to a trust fund kid born into wealth.

Really appreciate how your video also mentioned the relation of IQ to happiness and wealth. As a person with superior IQ, external expectations led me to a highly stimulating profession which I ended up hating and I am looking to shift careers. So here I am with high IQ with mental health problems and no money

How did you get the 132 IQ number? Reading that article it looks like the average for physicians is 121, and the 132 is the cutoff for the 90th percentile
