update: chang'e is now a very fashionable popstar on the moon (note: she's working through some emotional stuff)

Hou Yi: Yeah. My wife turned into the moon.

Some mortal traveler thoroughly confused and doesnt know what to say: ...That's rough buddy.

First his sons, then Sun Wukong

Dang, the Jade emperor really sucked at dealing with unruly teenagers.

When I was younger, my aunt told me a very different ending.
The version I heard about was that the elixir was in two pills. Chang’e didn’t know it was one pill a person and took both.
The first have immortality, the second the ability to fly.
She began to float up into the sky and would have floated away forever if Hou yi hadn’t shot an arrow to the moon with a rope for her to grab. She literally anchored herself to the moon and eventually the flying pill wore off. But chang’e was trapped on the moon forever. Without her lover, she became so lonely she cried every night.
The emperor of heaven felt bad and sent her a jade rabbit as a companion.
There was also a part explaining the phases of the moon. I can’t remember that part.

Chang'e also had a couple cameos in Journey to the West. She was the goddess that "Pigsy" drunkenly hit-on, while he was still the commander of the heavenly navy, which ended up getting him banished to the mortal realm and reincarnated as a pig, thus becoming the Pigsy we know.

Also her pet bunny escaped to the mortal realm, shapeshifted into the princess of India, and tried to seduce Tripitaka.

Hmm... in the version my grandma told me, the ten sons/suns were supposed to take turns going across the sky, but one day they were all like what the heck let's all go at the time it'll fun for everyone.

Imagine if Sun Wukong was the jade emperor at this point

"You shot the sons? DUDE THAT'S EPIC!!! Ten points!"

Easter Egg: Remember in Journey to the West, Pigsy was once a divine member of the heaven before he flirted (harassed) with some divine chick and was condemned to a mortal life? That divine chick is actually Chang'E, which is super bad because Hou Yi was like his teacher or something (before he became mortal, also in some version Pigsy is the apprentice who killed Hou Yi, so bad pig! Bad!)

Fun fact: the crew of Apollo 11 were told to look out for Chang'E as they were preparing to land on the Moon.

I’m sure there’s a fanfic somewhere about Chang’e, Artemis, and Kaguya all being roommates on the moon with different problems happening all the time.

I feel like this whole situation could have been solved pretty easily if sun wukong didn't just eat all of the peaches.

Couldn’t they each just have half of the elixir, then wait the thousands of years for the peach trees to grow (since they’re now beta-immortal) and THEN become gods?
