Lyrics

It's a God-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling no
And her daddy has told her to go

But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen

But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns

But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

I don’t know what it is about how this is mixed, but it’s just...perfectly minimalist. No drums, just piano, strings and the voice of Heaven’s Weirdest Angel.

My best friend Janice Mazzaferro was the biggest Bowie fan I ever have known in my 56 years on this planet. She had the words to this song painted on her wall. She saw Bowie on Broadway in The Elephant Man. I am forever jealous of that. Janice preceded Bowie in leaving this plane by more than 10 years. I'd like to think she has met him & is truly in Heaven. RIP Janice & Bowie.

Hey, everyone, if you are watching this video, that means I surely like you.
So please, take care of yourself, ok? It'll be alright.
We all have to live in a world without Bowie, but we'll do it together.
Love.

I sang this at a class concert for my community college. One of the best nights of my life. Although I will admit I never truly experienced Bowie's music before his passing. Rest in power.

My sister and I saw the original film clip when we were very little. We fell in love with him and this song. We had never seen anyone so extraordinarily and weirdly beautiful. We did get to see him live. He was incredibly talented. There are no words to describe his magic. Of course as teenagers, we fell in love with the Goblin King. And a man who was said to be just lovely and delightful as a human being. So blessed that we got to live at the same time as him.

This song has always been one of Bowie's masterpieces -- how incredibly beautiful is he? I fell in love with Bowie as a very young child, watching him in old television clips dressed in long skirts or dresses and beautifully made up. Thank you, David, for helping me to be brave in my own androgynous style as a little girl from Harlem, who wore my dad's fedora hats & vintage men's suits -- a nonconformist who still pushes the envelope. Bowie gave voice to "outsiders" like me -- an artistic, hetero girl who still loves painting outside of the lines... I will always love this incredibly gifted, beautiful spaceman...💖

I like this version of the video. The shots of the eyes remind me of how when I first saw the Life on Mars video a few years ago, I thought that he was wearing a contact lens to make his left eye look different from the right. Now I know that his eyes were like that all the time.
