Artist: David Bowie.
Song: Life On Mars?
Album: Hunky Dory.

Lyrics:

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling, "No!"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen

But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cos Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns

But the film is a saddening bore
'Cos I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Overall, I must say David Bowie was one of the best, most influential artists in the music industry of the 20th century. He was a man who changed with the times, but always kept himself.

Saw David in many concerts over a 40yr period.. I am truly lucky to have seen genius in the flesh.

There is somewhere a documentary where Rick Wakeman describes the Grandeur of David by showing how extraordinary the piano tune was. Imagine Rick Wakeman is impressed by a piano tune he has to Play. David really was a Genius. And btw of Course the greatest song of all.

I grew up listening to Bowie for over a decade and in college after I heard this masterpiece I wrote the below lyrics., ...came out of nowhere just had to get a pen and paper after listeing to Life on Mars? that day

85 L.A. (Lying Around)

I
In the rolls of celluloid
Flashing from the floor
I’ve seen one thousand (headlines)

(Spilling out the door)

Missing frames of thought
Falling to the ground
That you should’ve caught
(dreams of inaction)

II

Everyone wants to be
A dead young hero
Laid into cobblestone
That noone cares to see
Just Walking on

Lost precious time
Trying to break through
Someone else’s dream
Don’t let your own cloud turned into
Rain ---- and a another dead Monroe

(street life)

III

To the
Who---proceed without
Their own king’s sacred scepter

To the
Who---wither before
The jester’s

To the bishops—
all the riches
Out of the poor poor
Pauper’s

And To pauper watching
His dreams go down in smoke
Only to come true when he
Let’s the bishop smoke his cok

The kindom’s sacred scepter
The jester’s laughter
The bishop’s sickening riches
And a pauper’s soul sucked up into society moralities into a black hole

Only read recently that it’s Rick Wakeman from Yes on piano.... wonderful job, EPIC production values on an epic song, love it... reminds me of 1973 every time when I was 11 and starting to notice the world in all its beauty, horror and through my own wide eyed innocence ... anyone got a flying, time travelling De Lorean ?

As Philip Norman wrote, John Lennon was three-quarters of the Beatles. David would probably have agreed.
