Everything hinges on the Writing and the Story for this game. Story was what separated the good bioware games from the bad ones. Mass effect Andromeda despite having good combat/gameplay is such a slog because of the inferior story compared to the original trilogy. I hope we get a wonderful story from this game.

The devs did confirm in the Game Informer video that there will be some larger explorable areas (not necessarily tied to a mission) where you can find equipment, do side content, and fight "apex battles", but they've also been pretty specific in saying that they've tried to avoid collection quests and that they want all the content to feel meaningful. They specifically called out collecting shards in the Hinterlands as something they want to avoid during the Q&A. I felt a lot better hearing that because it feels like Dragon Age either goes too light or too heavy on exploration, and their game design philosophy seems oriented towards balancing that in a very intentional way.

I think I'm watching the video more because it's Mortismal than through any enthusiasm I have for the game. As someone who loved the first two games (despite the flaws of the sequel, it still had some of the best npc dialogue in any rpg) it's a bit of a shame how little I care about Dragon age now.

I'm finding it easier to accept this game if I reconfigure my perception of it to be a fantasy Mass Effect release, but I'll still likely be waiting for a deep sale before I touch it.

The 3 skills is such a disappointment, especially for mages. I feel like mages should be allowed to slot additional skills because a 3 trick mage is just lame. Also, there's no class identity as far as I can tell.

The high level combat showcase makes me want to play as a warrior which I don't do since I went with Rogue twice and Mage once.
Looking forward to the DAV either way and looking forward to your possible builds to use.

I cant think of another game series that has changed soo much from its core design. DAO was a modern crpg, 2 -3 were hybrids, and now 4 is pretty much an arpg. How did we go from full party control 10 plus skills in DAI to no party control bar giving orders, and 4 skills and a smaller party lol. This gameplay honestly sealed my opinion that i'm done with this franchise. DA4 is just a very different game from how it all started out.

I played all DA games and DLC's in the past and will also most likely be picking this up. I do however find the limitation to three Skills kinda worrying and on top of that, I don't know if my eyes are deceiving me, but graphically this seems almost a step down compared to DAI. I am excited to see more showcases in September, because I am a bit troubled about enemy design. To me the Darkspawn design here is a huge step down from previous entries. So lanky and cartoonish. I'll remain cautiously optimistic. Great content as always Mort :)

Thanks, wasn't aware they showed more. Not the most innovative system but I am definitely not opposed to it! I am not sure how long this system can remain fun if the game ends up being long; if it does, they better add easy respecs!

listen i'm as much of an origins fanatic as anyone else but why is everyone acting surprised that the game has an action focus as if the series hasn't been like this since dragon age 2 back in 2011? The limited number of abilities is a bit disappointing, though

I don't know why but I keep holding out hope that there is more to this combat that they devs are keeping quiet about. I am still convinced that there is a trigger you can pull down that opens up an alternative slots of active skills making the total to 6 instead of mere 3. The default slots are your core active skills that you can pick and choose from a variety of skills you can eventually unlock through the skill tree. The alternate three slots would be optional where you can choose not equip anything on it and rather focus more on the passive attributes in the skill tree. This would open up some variety in your class builds where you can choose to got for more active skills heavy set up or a character with a handful of active skills but with more passive bonuses that would be further augmented with the gear and the gems you can slot into. If not, I sincerely hope that there are at least other skills options that you can interchange without it breaking synergy with all the passive bonuses. Otherwise the combat will go stale very quickly and not being able to experiment with different builds will make the journey tedious unless the story is exceptional... which I don't think it will be.

In Mass Effect 2, companions only had two powers they could use, and that worked out well

Mission Based? So it isn't open world or open world in the sense like the other Dragon Age games?
