Shame is one of the most destructive emotions out there, not genuine guilt about having done wrong. "Shame dies on exposure" we need to be able to share our shame with safe people... sometimes only (good) professionals will do. ❤

One of the things I love most about my therapist is how good she is at identifying that covert shame. Like at my last session I was working with a very anxious part, and beyond the fear was an intense feeling of failure. My therapist immediately picked up on that thread and helped me root out the shame gremlin and give it back to the source of the shame. Having her to guide me through has been such an invaluable benefit to my mental health.

Laws are like that.
I walked into the wrong place as a kid and arrested. I was punished and shamed for breaking a law i didn't know existed.
Then each time someone wanted to control it pressure me, they would just say I was a criminal. Thus shaming me.
Over something i had no real control/knowledge about.

I laughed when I red this and thought to myself "oh, I could be an expert in feeling shame". It's really not funny though, it's actually really sad and shows me how crappy my family was that Shane was such a huge part of my experience being around them. Misery MADE company in my family. So sad.

It was really eye opening for me when my counselor questioned my feelings of guilt one day. Whether it was guilt or shame I was experiencing.
I asked, what's the difference? And she asked if I had actually hurt someone. I hadn't.

Patrick can you consider doing some sort of video on the saying - "SPOT IT YOU GOT IT?" And how that saying is not always true! I had someone shame me with that when i was pointing out a narcissist. I am just learning to identify narcissist and felt shamed by that statement. There didn't seem to be much on utube about it, Or other searches. Thank you Patrick for all your work!!!

like when i was in primary school and the lady who used to pick us up as daycare, her son used to make all of us parade naked for him...yet i was ashamed that it was my fault so never told anyone(there was worse abuse but this is youtube so keeping it clean)
