I have a theory about this. Kenobi's defensive style gives him an advantage against opponents who are angry and impatient during a fight (Maul, Anakin on Mustafar).
But, Dooku is always calm and precise in his fights, so Obi Wan can't beat him.

In Obi-Wan's defense, Dooku is no ordinary Form 2 user. The guy has perfected form 2 to such an insane degree that he's eliminated almost all of its inherent weaknesses.

Dooku, Obi-Wan and Anakin each having mastered and refined their forms to their highest degrees during wartime is such a cool concept.

Rock (form V), paper (form III) and scissors (form II).

Kenobi can't outduel his grand master

He was smooth making kenobi go offensive and anakin defensive

Another thing that should be considered is that Dooku always played them to their weakness. He always kept the offensive on Anakin, forcing him to adopt a defensive style, while forcing Kenobi to attack.

Dooku forces Obi wan to attack and Anakin to defence.

Dooku is Obi’s master’s master. That is why.

Dooku literally admits in the film novels that obi wan and Anakin in his final duel with him is pretty much at his level when they reveal their styles

Dooku was one of the best duelist honestly, he was exceptionally smart. When he faught Anakin and kenobi together, he would force kenobi to go on the offense and made anakin defensive so they couldn't utilize their fighting style.

I think its because of how Soresu works by being purely defensive until the opponent becomes exhausted which is where you’ll finally strike but with makashi it negates the whole exhausted part because its extremely efficient and conserves your energy

It's like paper rock and scissors with Dooku, Anakin and Obi Wan

In legends obi was so weak in the force he almost didn't get picked by a master.

The force wall argument makes sense to be honest even if it's from Legends. There have been so many instances in the movies and in Clone Wars where Obi Wan is always open to force moves.

Here are some notes to take in for Obi-wan.

In the fights he had against Dooku, it is likely that he switched from Form III (Soresu) to Form IV (Ataru), the form in which Qui-gon trained him in, to take the offense against Dooku.

During the battle over Coruscant, inside the Invisible hand, we can see Kenobi's instinctive switch of form when comparing his movements against Dooku vs his movements when dispatching the B2 Super Battle droids.

With Dooku, his initiative is to attack and put him on defense, as he knows Soresu won't work on Dooku. (Not because he can break it, but because Dooku won't play into Kenobi's defense with Anakin attacking him)

With the droids, his blaster deflections are made with quick and efficient swings that are used to dismantle them as fast as possible to return to the fight.

The same mentality will also aid Kenobi during the Clone war, as his Ataru was put to the test against Dooku's mind games. Dooku put Anakin on the defensive, whilst having Kenobi take the offensive, both ends are their respective weak suit. (Anakin is the sword, Kenobi is the shield)

Dooku made sure he had the advantage right from the start against these two.

Yes and yes 👍 Form 3 sets up for Purely defense and only delays the inevitable of a fight, Yes Force wall, Awesome short Zack 🗡️

I hadn't considered the Force Wall concept, because it's not acknowledged outside of EU content. That's a really good point, and honestly, this is a great place to bring that idea into play! I also wonder how much their training legacy plays into it. Dooku trained Qui-Gon and Qui-Gon trained Obi-Wan - I wonder if Dooku learned Qui-Gon's tells throughout their training duels? And if Qui-Gon passed any of these on to Ben, even accidentally, then perhaps Dooku would recognize these tells and/or flaws almost immediately?

Soresu is all about outlasting your opponent until he gets tired, and then you strike.
Makashi is all about sneaking through someone's defenses to land the winning (not necessarily deadly) strike while spending minimal amounts of energy.
Dooku's stile was literally the counter to Obi Wan's.

I thought when it came to the force shields the reason we saw dooku break through it is because darth sidious helped dooku break through it. Because you also gotta remember kenobi was able to hold his ground with darth vader when they fought on mustafar. They both tried forcing pushing each other and it wound up throwing them both back

In RotS I've always believed that Sidious helped break down Obi Wan's Force wall too. When he does the "yeah!" And head nods.
