Most people know how important it is to get plenty of electrolytes when you're on a Keto \ Carnivore Diet, and there are plenty of great electrolyte drink mixes out there. However, they can be expensive, but you can make your own and save A LOT of money!

Drink Mix

Use 1/2 tsp in 16oz - 32 oz of water
This is approx 1000mg Sodium and 200mg Potassium

Here's an idea for magnesium. My dad gave me a recipe to make magnesium water that is SUPER cheap and you can use this water to mix your electrolyte mix. It's a bit 'sciency' (well, not really, but it feels like it lol.)

What you will need: 1 liter of carbonated water - cold - should be in a plastic bottle. Yes, this is important... it's part of the sciency stuff. The sides should be able to be collapsible.
3 Tbs Unflavored milk of magnesia (trust me, you don't want a flavored one)

Open the sparkling water very slowly - you want to retain as much carbonation as possible.
Add to it the milk of magnesia (funnels help!)
Quickly recap tightly and shake vigorously.
Put it in your fridge on its side for 30 minutes.
Take it out after 30 minutes and shake it again.
Repeat the chilling and shaking as the goal is to have it return to a clear liquid.

So here's the sciency part: The CO2 will combine with the milk of magnesia and convert it to magnesium bicarbonate. You know this happens because the liquid will go from cloudy to clear and the sides of the bottle will slightly collapse. (which is why you need the collapsible plastic container - otherwise I don't know if glass might break or what.) The end product is not fizzy at all.

NOTE: what you have made is a *CONCENTRATE. DO NOT DRINK THE I can't emphasize that enough. The liter of liquid you have made is CONCENTRATED magnesium bicarbonate. So the mix to bring it to a drinkable level is this:

1/4 c for every 1/2 gallon of filtered or distilled water.

or if you want to go a gallon at a time:

1/2 c to 1 gallon of filtered/distilled water.

As another note: Magnesium Bicarbonate is one of the best absorbable forms of magnesium at 40 to 50% absorption.

At the time of writing this, you can get generic brand milk of magnesia from Walmart for 10.88 for 16 oz. That's enough to make a little more than 10.5 liters of concentrate... which in turn makes about 84 gallons of magnesium bicarbonate. That's 168 eight-ounce cups... or about 6.5 cents per 8 ounces. (this is not including buying sparking water, but I would highly recommend getting a soda stream to make your own sparkling water using water you filter yourself. I can always find soda streams on FB marketplace or Craigslist for about $20. Some people will even have extra co2 canisters that you can turn in to get cheaper co2 when you run out.) Be careful though, this is noted to 'try to drink two 8 ounce glasses a day but go slowly because it can alkalize your stomach and make you feel slightly nauseated if you drink it too fast' - so keep that in mind too. If you drink more mixes and use this, you might want to water your concentrate down even more to 1/4c for every gallon if the 1/2c to a gallon is too potent or makes you nauseated.

Also, there's not much of a discernible flavor to this either - so it shouldn't alter the taste of anything.... I mean... as long as you didn't use a flavored milk of magnesia. ;)

Hope that helps. I like your idea. :)

I have been using these products for my electrolytes, too. However, I do add magnesium. You can get capsules and open them and pour them in your drink mixture or take them separately. I put them in my dry mixture. They run about 10 cents a capsule. I gauge the minerals to emulate LMT. I’m a Happy Camper.

I did keto for a while and fell into the trap of eating all those fake food keto treats. When I went carnivore I thought that finally I wasn't going to have every youtuber trying to sell me products, but I was wrong. They found a way with Carnivore Crisps, LMNT, Redmans salt, and Kerrygold butter. Thank you for this.

Okay. I was JUST on Amazon looking to buy some LMNT and freaked out at the price. Thanks for the recipe to make my own. You got a like and a subscribe! 😊

LMNT flavored products contain maltodextrin not openly disclosed. It is included in "0ther flavors/ingredients". LMNT is allowed to do this because the government considers it a safe additive. If you are sensitive to maltodextrin, be aware that it is in the LMNT flavored products.

Do not follow the ratios that the name brand skinny grey packets have. They are *WRONG.*

I am wondering if you could use cream of tartar instead of nosalt. This product would provide potassium also. What are your thoughts on this?

As he says - it has no magnesium which is very important. Comparing to LMNT is not good either as LMNT doesn't have enough potassium. Definitely don't want Stevia if you are doing no sweetener.

FYI, LMNT does post their recipe on their website for those who would prefer to make their own.

This was AMAZING!!! Great savings tip. I’ll definitely search the company for additional flavors as well. Have to put the recipe on hold until after I complete my 90 day BBBE challenge.

LMNT is one of those hyper-marked products that only foolish people or people who don't have to care about money would use. Anytime a company is as aggressive in advertisement as LMNT, it's because their product is dirt cheap to make and they have a massive profit margin. Why not make it cheaper and sell more? Not productive from the standpoint of maximizing profit, it's just more work for them. However, will people who want to appear trendy pay for the brand? You betcha!

I have a similar recipe that I drink 2 or three times daily. I also add one drop of iodine to the first drink each morning. Thanks for sharing.

Yes! Video was helpful! I understood that we need a Sodium - Potassium balance... but, didn't know where to get Potassium. I forgot about 'No-Salt'! Thanks I will try this. 😊

Man that ratio of salt to potassium seems way off when most people are already getting too much sodium compared to potassium.
