Reading the signs saying "Experiment Discontinued" in the lowest level of the salt mine, and realizing that there were things even Aperture Science would give up on, was the most terrifying moment I ever experienced playing a video game.

The audio recordings have always fascinated me. They basically telll the story of how Aperture went from a compay with billions of dollars thanks to the army and shower curtains, into a bankrupt company since they don't release products, and how their ethics become more corrupted and how they start picking up random homeless people when in the past they took out celebrities, astronauts, war heroes, olympians, and more.

You know, I just realized...
If old Aperture were to collapse...

...the entire facility above might collapse.
Think about it.
When you're getting back up from old Aperture, you can see giant spring-things holding modern Aperture up.
So, if those unstable salt mines collapse, it might be bye-bye for Aperture Science.

I remember the first time I experienced this at 11 years old. This song’s gradual buildup scared me. As I slowly approached the giant vault door I wondered what evil or terrifying thing was within because of how ominous the music was. Then, of course, I was hit by the tiny door behind the giant vault gag. I nearly died of laughter

i remember falling in the hole, thinking the game was actually finished, then i realised i was basically half way thru the game

This is easily the most disturbing song in the game. Perfect for what I believe to be the most eerie part of Portal 2. Just imagine it: you're miles below the main Aperture facility (i.e. even further below the surface), you're all alone—and I mean TRULY alone; no GLaDOS, no Wheatley, no anybody—and you're trapped in the abandoned ruins of the old Aperture testing facility, deep in the bowels of Aperture Science. It's quite a harrowing image, isn't it? And this music helps illustrate it perfectly.

Chell is truly unintimidated by the sheer amount of “DO NOT ENTER” and “KEEP OUT” signs lol

Portal 2 has such an incredible tone and atmosphere, and the music that plays is always very fitting depending on where Chell is, and what situation she’s in. Vitrification is no exception, it totally fits the deepest, darkest, lifeless, decayed, and unsettling depths of the Enrichment Center! Such a masterpiece, even in 2024 :)

This fits the atmosphere of Old Aperture perfectly.

One thing that's interesting to note is that at the start of this section, you can still see Chambers from new aperture far above you. Meaning that old aperture isn't just "below" new aperture. Parts of the facility extend down PARALLEL to it. Aperture is just THAT huge.

Vitrification: literally "transformation into glass." Used to store nuclear waste for a long time...

The thing that makes a video game good in my opinion is the music. When you have a series like Portal or Half-Life where the music resonates within you months after you've played is what makes a game good.

A likely hypothesis for the disappearance of the Borealis is that the technology used for portal gun teleportation was implemented on a much larger, even more experimental scale, propelling the ship through an 'area of effect' portal of sorts, capturing anything within its event horizon and teleporting it with it.

Man, just walking around the old, broken-down facilities of Old Aperture from over 50 years ago...It's creepy...

Truly one of the more haunting pieces.

This song always used to creep me out, mostly because of the title... I thought vitrified = turned to glass, and with those vitrified chambers, well, it's Aperture, who knows if they got the test subjects out first? During that section of the game I was pretty much constantly on the lookout for a body slumped by the side, twisted in pain, with every part of their body turned into nothing but glass. The song still makes me uneasy.

I love this song. It ties in so perfectly with the part of the game it goes with. You're literally over 2 miles under the surface of the planet, underneath years of progressively more advanced structures in this dark damp cave, surrounded by ruins, with parts of what you knew just minutes ago dangling above your head. You look into the fog to see nothing but a seemingly endless abyss. This song is dark and deep.

I never realized how creepy this game was until I listened to the individual osts. I mean just think about it...

Get mad!
Prometheus was punished by the gods for giving the gift of knowledge to man. He was cast into the bowls of the earth and pecked to death by birds.

PotatOS = Prometheus
God = Wheatley
Bowls of the earth: The old testing site
Get mad: Cave Johnson says that

Just a heads up, we're gonna have a super conductor turned up full blast and pointed at you for the duration of this next test. I'll be honest, we're throwing science at the walls here to see what sticks. No idea what it'll do.

If there is one thing, I can congratulate valve on, Its their worldbuilding.

the way Most writers' express the size of fictional megacorporation's is by having their influence everywhere with most businesses being bought out and under their control and having a monopoly on everything to even where the Government is under their control like buyinlarge, vault tech, and the corporation from the Lego movie, with the size of the headquarters only being the icing on the very large cake of lore, but here the size of a megacorporation like aperture is shown through music and the giant fields of pillars in-between the old and new facilities
