That's debatible, because we have the famous case of Galileo, who was banned from keep researching by the inquisition. And that's not in the middle ages. Actually genetics (mentioned in the short) didn't appear in the middle ages, I agree that appeared because of Gregor Mendel, but it was way later than the inquisition time. I'm actually catholic, but I think that we have to recognize that the Church hasn't been flawlessly perfect

The Dark Ages isn’t a misnomer. It’s called that for both the reasons you gave. Lack of scientific advancement and people stopped reading and writing as much. They’re not two separate things. The church and science have always been at odds because the church is supposed to fill in what science doesn’t know. But as time goes on science keeps figuring out more, and the church will kick and scream to resist that change until the evidence is completely undeniable. Then it figures out a way to make it work in their little catholic world model, then rinse and repeat.
