I suspect my elderly mother is a covert vulnerable narcissist and there is very little advice how to deal with people like this especially when they need care and have the whole deck of victim cards because of old age and illnesses. Setting boundaries is hard when the manipulation tactics are so covert. Mom, I won't help you guys if you don't stop sighing... Or hey mom, I've noticed that when I'm in a good mood your behaviour is extra exhausting and you only get happy when I finally feel tired and miserable after being poked and prodded long enough. It would be so much "easier" it it was something concrete like name calling or being directly nasty.

Maybe this video can be expanded into a more detailed series of videos with examples .
I would find it very helpful if you give us your examples (based on your experience as a therapist ) of what manipulation looks, sounds and feels like, what boundaries sound and feel like, etc .❤

What do I tell a friend of mine that has a narc ex but doesn't have family or many friends, certainly none local to her, and doesn't have any hobbies or healthy self-respect?

When your mom is a narcissist and has just enough interest in you to know what hurts you and does.
You trained yourself not to react to the point you blurr out what they say untill you go home. Depersonalisation at its best...
When you get there you think about what has been said, then it hits you and you cant help still feeling hurt because its still your mom. But at least she did not get to see you cry, which is why she said what she said.. 😢

Does this sound relatable? 👇🏻
