I have four Diawa Fuegos. Three 2500s and a 3000. They are awesome for fresh and inshore salt water fishing.

For ball bearings quality>quantity, there are many reels from daiwa and shimano with 6 bearings that are better than ones with 10. Cheap ball bearings that aren't shielded or protected will get dirt in them and make the reel feel rough. Gear durability and tolerances in the handle and internals will make the reel feel more smooth too.

I was surprised you didn’t mention the instant reverse switch “back real” feature that you prefer.

Randy,

I appreciate your insight and you taking the time to make this video!

I will say though, I do think it comes down to the *quality* of the ball bearings vs the *quantity* of the ball bearings. Even the shimano stradic and sustain reels are running 8+1bb setups. Daiwa tatula LTs run a 7 bearing setup (one ceramic roller albeit)

I think we can both agree that those are all better reels than a Lews Mach Crush or a Kastking Kestral with 11 bearings each.

I think the rest of your video is spot on, but I think getting caught up with the number of bearings vs their quality and the implementation of them is a mistake.

Like I said though, much respect and this will definitely be on my mind when considering future reel purchases!

A couple years ago I picked up a Shimano stradic ci4 2500 FA at a garage sale for $50 and now they go for $200 on ebay and it is a game changer, now I can't even look at a inexpensive reel...

Great video Randy! I am surprised you didn’t recommend making sure it has a “back reel” switch. It’s surprising how many $100+ reels don’t have them. As always, looking fwd to your next video. C’MON 100K !!!

What is the maximum Pound test line In floralcarbon you would use to put on that real and have it work decently when using it for jerk baits.. The larger spool sizes on many reels today are better because the real itself is lighter. It used to be by going to a larger spool that the reels were so heavy they screwed up the balance of your outfit. I use cigar invisic line.

Great advice, spinning reels have come a long way and cast so much farther, and so much smoother than they used to be. One big point for first time users is to learn to feather their line with their index finger when casting and don't flip the bail with the handle, close it with your hand. They will have a lot less line twist doing this and as far as I am concerned, line twist can be a nightmare with a spinning reel. .

Good advice. Thanks. I'd like to hear your thoughts about 2-piece rods.

Seems the Shimano quick fire and Daiwa autocast tigger operated reels are not as popular as they once were Shimano still makes the Solstace...I love them and all my poles have that type reel. I can't understand why they appear to be phasing them out...just pull the trigger bail if flipped and line is on you index finger ready to cast.

I have many reels with less than 10 bearings that are smooth as butter and work great.

Nice instructional video! I still use the old Shimano Quickfire reels. Just seems like I can get more casts off.

Since watching your videos, I use a spinning reel so much more. It has helped my fishing...

I agree with you about the differences in reels at particular price points and how that relates to spinning vs baitcasting reels. But as far as how to invest your money in rods and reels, I think it's most worthwhile to invest more heavily in the rods and reels that you use the most for the fishing you do regardless of whether it's spinning or casting gear.

Fully agreed with the 3000 size. I fish baitcasters mainly but my spinning reels are 3000 size paired with medium and medium heavy rods.

I prefer 1000 sized reels for the weight savings and greater overall sensitivity and balance of the combo. They are more economical to respool due to the lower capacity. From my testing with same model reels in different sizes I found the rod and lure make more difference in distance than the reel.
