2022 Toyota Tundra | Review & Road Test

For the latest Toyota Tundra pricing and information:
The Toyota Tundra is all-new for 2022. Based on our first drive of the 2022 Tunda here are our thoughts.
The old V8 is gone, replaced by two engine options. The first is a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 389 hp/479 lb-ft torque. That’s the base model power plant that has more power than the outgoing V8 and will be more efficient.
Do we miss the V8? Short answer, no. The V6 produces convincing power. It accelerates well and gets the full-size Tundra moving quickly.
There’s also a hybrid engine that Toyota’s calling the i-Force Max. (437 hp/583 lb-ft) That’s the same 3.5-liter 6 but it’s paired with a 36 kW motor and 1.87kw battery located in the bell housing between the engine and the transmission.
First thought about this engine, wow. It’s got guts. We love how the hybrid works in tandem with the turbo. It seamlessly shifts between hybrid power and gas. It doesn’t feel like it’s tripping upon itself at all. Acceleration feels quick and available at throttle tip-in.
Both of those powertrains mate to a new 10-speed automatic transmission. We're not going to lie, this transmission had a bit of gear confusion when downshifting and it’s not super quick.
The chassis the Tundra rides on is an all-new fully boxed high-strength steel ladder frame. But engineers reduced weight by using aluminum parts in the body. Toyota’s implemented a composite bed to reduce even more weight.
The front suspension gets a new double-wishbone suspension, which also helps with stability and handling. There’s less body roll for sure.
Go all out with the TRD Pro Tundra and you’ll get 2.5-inch diameter internal bypass shocks, a locking rear differential, and a front stabilizer bar.
Overall, the ride is a night and day improvement over the last Tundra. There’s so much more stability and control, it’s far more comfortable.
Thanks in part to the Tundra’s new power, it increased its max towing capacity (Max Towing: 12,000 pounds/Payload: 1940 pounds)
Tundras come in many shapes and sizes from the Base SR both 2- and 4-wheel drive to the SR5, the Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro models. There are two 4-door cab options and three bed lengths available on the Tundra (5.5-foot/6.5-foot/8.1-foot).
If you’re in the market for a full-size truck, you really do have some tough choices to make between the Ram 1500, Ford’s F150, and the Chevy Silverado.
