Mike Nash Responds (you can view his full report in the comments section):

Mike Nash set the facts straight after the video was published. There are a lot of inaccuracies regarding the online sources for this incident. The following is the correct report from Mike Nash:

Overall, the description of Fang Cave and its discovery, and the role of George Evanoff in its discovery, first exploration and naming of the cave is substantially correct. However, the story is confused at times, with several inaccuracies.

1m 36s: This is NOT correct. In fact it was Claude Rouchon and two senior members of the Alberta Speleological Society who drove to Prince George where they met with myself, Mike Nash, and George Evanoff.

5m 34s: It is NOT correct to say that it is not known if it was decided to kill the bear. In fact, it was the wish of family and friends not to pursue the bear, and it was the decision of the Conservation Officers on the scene NOT to do so in that the bear had been acting in character in defending its moose kill, and was not thought to pose any further special danger to humans.

6m 0s: Torpy Trail, NOT Trophy Trail.

6m 10s: It is a false dramatization to state that “George took many secrets of the cave with him when he died.” George had NO secrets of the cave that weren’t known to the others who had been there with him, and those who came along later. Indeed, much of what is now know about the cave was learned in later explorations after George’s death.

7m 50s: It is NOT correct to say that I and the two [Alberta Speleological Society] club members panicked after becoming lost in the cave. Yes, we came close to making a bad choice to descend Disconnection Falls, but after a considered (but not panicked) discussion we elected a different course which eventually worked out for us.

8m 44s: The Coliseum is correctly named here – see comment below at 17m 12s.

9m 00s: I have 44 years of outdoor and backcountry experience in the Prince George area, NOT 34 years as stated in the video.

9m 57s: to the end of the video: The account REPEATEDLY and INCORRECTLY states that I accompanied John Huybers and two other members of the Alpine Club into the cave on the fateful trip. I was NOT a member of this caving party, NOR of the mammoth cave rescue effort that ensued through the evening and overnight. As far as I know, the description of the accident and the rescue is substantially correct; but to reiterate, I was NOT part of it.

17m 12s: The caption “Entering the Cathedral” should read “Entering the Coliseum”

"Jon had seven broken ribs, his collar bone was broken in two spots, a collapsed lung and his right shoulder was crushed along with one of his fingers by the giant rock"

*"this was one of the worst injuries he has ever had"*

Yeah, we figured that. If it wasn't the dude needs a new hobby.

Nothing more relaxing than coming home from work and watching videos of other people caught up in caving disasters.

I have so much respect for the men that take their time and risk their lives to help rescue people in these stories.

Note to self: do not participate in activities for which there is a group dedicated to rescuing said participants

You'll never have to rescue me from a cave, or from a mountain, Fear of heights, and tight spaces will protect me from such calamities.

I especially love when the "caving-gone-wrong" videos I watch have photos and/or video footage of the actual cave that the story involves.

After watching countless caving gone wrong videos, I've learned that you shouldn't go caving if your name is John

My rule to caving: once I can't walk freely, I don't go further. No crawling, squeezing, wedging, worming.

well done, glad you got a sponsor. Still loving your work. Thankfully bears were never a danger I had to consider, passing a pub en route was more of a threat.

Broke 8 ribs! We only have 8! I cracked one rib in a fall and it hurt! Can’t imagine! I will have to say whenever someone is injured in a cave whether above ground or under water there is always no shortage of fellow enthusiasts willing to risk their own lives to rescue or help someone! 52 rescuers answered the call! They do it out of respect for the people hurt because they know how dangerous these adventures are! My hats off to them!

John is a very lucky man. It was incredible that the original cavers were able to get the huge boulder off him in time before he went to long without oxygen. Then the rescue was accomplished by such experienced women and men. Yes, John was an extremely lucky man. Thanks for another excellent video.

Falling sharp rocks that can weigh 1, 000's of pounds, Flowing water of death, bear attacks... it's like listening to a new drug commercial and hearing all of the bad side effects and thinking is that drug really worth it?

As "The D" (see below) says: Nothing more relaxing than coming home from work and watching videos of other people caught up in caving disasters. They are spot on. It makes the issues I'm dealing with seem more manageable. Caving and cave diving stories are fascinating.

When you go caving, that far away from a rescue, it never ends well.
