Im amazed that because of rain they cancel rock climbing to go caving. The inherent stupidity in that statement is astounding.

Cannot believe only ONE parent had the commonsense to keep his child home.

I live about 20 minutes away from these caves, and I've visited myself. There are signs warning of the dangers - including flash flooding. Locals know how unpredictable they can be. We had torrential rain in the days leading up to and including when this poor boy was reported missing. Bad weather meant the school changed plans and shifted the adventure underground...? Who in their right mind would give that the okay?

"due to rain forecast climbing has been changed to caving" excuse me what now?

"The school ensured student were equipped with safety gear: Helmets, waterproof lights, caving overalls, and gumboots" I think they forgot the diving gear...

its not that hard "how do we balance safety with adventure?" like.... Hi. Dont go out in the rain. Simple. just wow

My first question for all of this is how can a school look at the weather forecast and think “not suitable for rock climbing. Oh I know, caving”. How is caving better?! Especially one like this. How awful, shows the lack of understanding of the risks. I feel for the people involved.

Flashfloods are no joke. I just had one pass through. 20 mins tops and it poured a few inches at a time. It's insane how they are underestimated. So dangerous.

They ACTUALLY believe that those students were well prepared!! And could someone please explain to the instructors about FULL water tables. We came across School kids on canyon trips and every one had appauling deficiencies. Often lost. No asthma inhalers. Cold. Could someone explain the these half-trained leaders that you can do adventurous trips relatively safely. Having maps, having medication, waterproof torches, thermal clothing and knowing how to swim is a start.

As a New Zealander I was wondering when you would cover this devastating cave story - it was so sad and terrible. Thank you for covering this so well.

This is just one of millions of examples. No matter what "experts" say, dont do anything u personally dont feel safe doing! And dont let ppl pressure u into doing something u dont feel safe doing!

Another senseless tragedy. How many warnings do you need? Geez. Thank goodness the one boy's father pulled him from the trip. He tried to notify the school and was apparently ignored.

School: "We have this piece of paper that says it's dangerous, so we are not liable for leading the children sent to us for protection and education into danger."
Every single teacher and staff at that school should be deeply ashamed of themselves and resign for being absolutely unfit of their jobs.

I have to say, those glow worms really are something.

No way I would let my kids go on a caving trip. Too much can go wrong. RIP. Thanks Mrdeified ⭐

Arrogance, stupidity and entitlement are a recipe for disaster.

I'll never understand why we as human beings have such so much arrogance. History has shown us repeatedly that mother nature will ALWAYS humble you. If bad weather is coming and your first thought is "ah we'll be fine." That's a sign you probably gon die. Stay home! There is no time frame on adventuring. Nothing wrong with playing it safe and going another day. Condolences to that young man's family and friends.

Who in their right mind go underground when it rains ??? I used to go caving as a kid, and we had professional guides, and I remember how many times they would check the temperature and always canceled during rain... We just did activities in a gymnasium.

Like most caving tragedies, this story is heart-wrenching because of just how avoidable it was.
