There is a quicker way to work out the second problem...

First you figure out how far Ryan will go in 3 hours, 3 x 28 = 84km. That is how far Ryan will be when Jenna starts driving. All she needs to do is close that 84km gap. You divide the gap by their speed difference to get the answer. 84/42 = 2. 2 hours for Jenna to catch up.
