Time, Rate, and Distance (Same Direction)

Hello everyone, and math students! This is my very first animated math video and I hope it helps out visually. And welcome to my channel.

This uniform motion (problem 1) involves traveling in the same direction, solving for "how long" one moving object traveling until it meets up with the second moving object. This problem is also called "distance rate time problem" or "uniform rate problem."

[Thank you for watching, and please subscribe, it will mean a great support to me and this channel.]

RECAP: This is an algebra problem. It's a "distance" word problem, and solving for "how long." It uses d=rt (distance equals rate times time).

The actual problem from the video:
"Car 1 starts from point A and heads for point B at 60 mph. Fifteen minutes later, car 2 leaves the same point A and heads for point B at 75 mph. How long before car 2 overtakes car 1?"

These are a great way to give the context for these types of problems.  Thanks for putting in the work to create the animations.

Thanks for the pictures at the beginning -- I'm looking for a way to illustrate :)

Thank you! I just threw it out there, hoping it's engaging enough for students and possibly entertaining for the rest of us. :) Thanks again, Leah.

Hi Shane, I'll try to explain it in writing. I'd rather do it in person, but here goes:
Since D=RT, we are going to use T=D/R (divide both sides by R).
Implicitly, we know that Plane 1 (from Granville) traveled 160 km. So its D=160.
Plane 2 (from Lipton) traveled unknown distance, so its D = x.
With T=D/R, Time for Plane 1 is 160/200.
And Time for Plane 2 is x/300.
"Same time" means the equation is 160/200 = x/300. Solve for x, x=240.
BUT the total distance is 160 + x, so 160 + 240 = 400 km.

This is the clearest explanation I've seen! Thanks a million :)

to wang Maggie: the answer to your train problem is 0.2 hours or 12 minutes. That is how long the entire train needs to go through the tunnel. Keep in mind that the back of the train must travel 8 km to clear the tunnel. Displacement = Initial position + Initial velocity times (*) time (if the train does not speed up inside the tunnel). so 8=0+40(0.2).

i don't understand...the x+1÷4 suggests that the time taken by the red mini= that taken by the green...thus having the same velocity which is not the case or else the silver mini won't catch up with the red

Distance Car 1: --line-- 60(x+1/4) --line-->|
Distance Car 2: --line-- 75x --line --line-->|
Distance each: --line-- 75 miles -- line -->|

To get 75 miles, since x=1, after you solved, plug in 60(1+1/4)=75 or 75(1)=75.
I hope this is the hand graph you're looking for. Thank you for watching.

Make D=8 instead of 7 because you need to include the length of the truck. R=40. T=how long.

D=RT,  8=40T, solve for T, T=8/40=1/5 hr. OR like in his videos, 1/5 times 60 = 12 minutes.

Hi Brandon, my apologies. I just read you comment. If you still need help, you can message me the problem. I will post the solution on my blog, there's a link on my main page. I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for watching.

somewhat helpful depending on the time, rate, and distance problem if it is a point a or b problem. i wondering by today if possible  if you need find distance which you explained, but its is a new kind of problem how would i solve it? i dont understand it.

D=RT,  8=40T, solve for T, T=8/40=1/5 hr. OR like in his videos, 1/5 times 60 = 12 minutes.

12 minutes should be the answer
