In that last problem and others like it where things are going in opposite directions, it would be a lot easier to solve if you just added the distances each traveled to get the total distance. The distance of the diesel train is 3.5r and the distance of the freight train is 2(r+6). They add to 312.3 km. You don't have to subtract from the total miles, as you did.
