First of all, what is a partition? Well, it's kind of in the name. It's part of a hard drive. Essentially. It's just a piece of space that section off from the rest of it in order to be almost treated like a separate entity. So in other words, you can have multiple partitions on one drive and these can all be viewed through something like the Windows Disk Manager, for example.

So partitions can be created or removed pretty easily with the really any piece of disk management software are typically pretty hardy and well protected. However, they do have still the potential to become corrupted through something like user error or sudden power loss. And so pretty much anything that could affect an entire hard drive can potentially corrupt a partition.

And if that's the place that you find yourself in then you're going to need a pretty hefty piece of software in order to get your stuff back. Now a lot of software out there is pretty good at managing them right like moving them around creating them or moving them all that sort of thing, but not a whole lot of software is directly dedicated to target a partition with specific recovery algorithms that can allow you to get your files back.

Today we're going to be using a software called Disk Drill, which does a great job in restoring files from lost partitions. You can target a specific partition that you want on your hard drive and use all of its power targeted in that one area to give you the best chances of getting your files back from that partition alone.

Steps to recover data from a deleted or lost partition:

Step 1. We need to download and install partition recovery software (like Disk Drill), it is for both PC and Mac.
Note: We're trying to not overwrite the files. That's rule number one. So if the partition that you're trying to recover from his on your main Drive where your operating system is stored like your C drive, for example, if you're on Windows and you don't want to download Disk Drill to that same disk, and essentially what that means is you want to download it to something like an external hard drive or thumb drive or an SD card or something else besides the drive that you're trying to recover from that's really important.

Step 2. Launch Disk Drill after connecting any external devices that are required for the recovery. This would be an external device that had been accidentally formatted like a hard drive or SD card. After launching the program, select the device from which you want to recover a partition from the application’s disk list.

Step 3. And at this point we can start the scan. So go ahead and scroll down to logical volumes and find the partition that you want to scan then select it and choose. Choose your scanning method. So when it comes to scanning method, there are a few different options. There's quick scan. There's deep scan. There's all scanning methods which will run all of them in the precise order that disc drills deems appropriate and it really all depends on a couple things. Obviously the longer and deeper the scan the better your results will be but the more time it will take so for me. Once you've selected your scanning method go ahead and click - search for lost data.

Step 4. Preview the files that have been recovered by the tool. You can pause the scan at any point or let it run to completion. The program’s intuitive interface makes it easy to find files based on categories such as pictures, documents, and videos. Select the files you want to recover from a partition. In the case of a formatted partition, you may simply want to recover all of the files.

Step 5. Click the Recover button to begin the recovery from your partition. You will be prompted to choose a new storage location at which to save the recovered data. Again, do not use the device with the lost partition or you run the risk of corrupting the data you are trying to recover.

Disk Drill is not free! After it's done scanning you have to pay to recover your lost files. Just a warning.

The scan feature is nice and it didn't take toooo long to scan an entire 2TB drive and find all my files but you need to mention in the video that recovery over 500mb is a paid feature. Don't just leave that out. I can't criticize anyone for charging for software but be up front.

What if you deleted the partition accidentally? The files are still on there but the partition letter was deleted.

I need data recovery in my deleted external hard drive during partitions data transfer from Windows computer to Apple MacBook that 4 TB WD Elements 25A3 Media HD that showed only 34 GB space with unknown folders, I don’t see any of my files. Also, How to Fix External Hard Drive Not Showing Up because of Partition Issues of my 4 TB external hard drive?
What is your Recovery Cost Estimate?
Are you charging if you couldn’t recover?
A guy who transferred data from Windows computer to MacBook and erased via my HD wrote:
“I did partition the drive before the process and I specified to the computer where on the drive I wanted to use but it was erased completely”. “no only the partition scheme was changed so it won't appear. download on the Mac app store the remote desktop client app from Apple”.
And 2 technicians who tried to recover wrote:
“So I've ran the scan 3 times. Unfortunately it looks like when the drive was formatted they used a secure format which intentionally erases old data. There are some files that I'm able to recover but it's nothing like what you were describing. It's like 20 picture, 20 documents and some other assorted files”

Saw u replying and helping everyone as much as u can first of all thanks for that really appreciated.
Coming to the point, I accidentally installed a utility 'ventoy' on my external hdd. It not only formatted the whole disk but also changed its file system to exFAT. In panic, I again formatted the disk to NTFS (previous one). I had a well organized 1TB of data in it. I still didn't stored any data on it as it will overwrite the old data.
Can u plz tell how to recover the complete data with the file structure and names like as it was organised before..? It will be very helpful..

Hello,

I have two questions which are quite technical:

- Is it possible to recover a disk in Raid 5 when one of the partitions has been erased?

And,
- Is it possible to rebuild a Raid 5 on 2 discs after formatting?

Thank you
Denis

Hi i have a question. I accidentally deleted a partition and i tried to make a new volume out of it again because i thought it would recover the files but it did not. Thats why i deleted the partition again to run some data recovery on the unallocated part, I used EaseUs program but the partition it recovered is the partition that was deleted the second time and not yhe first and original partition, which basically doesnt contain my files. Can u answer this.

And also, i did not put any file in it yet to avoid overwriting

yes it does work
but regrettably I have overwritten D drive (first partition from my HDD) 😢
so recovering the files from this partition would be needing some luck, fortunately I have recovered some from it

I am having trouble getting a volume to show up. This is an encrypted volume. When it is decrypted it acts like a partition and I can see it on the leftside of my file explorer, but it isn't showing up on disk drill. Any tips?
