Who it's for: Beginners through experienced, everyday users looking to sharpen their skills and increase efficiency in Microsoft Access.

What it is: Access is Microsoft’s relational database application used to organize and store data. Access also has reporting capabilities.

What you'll learn: We start with navigating a completed database while exploring the concept of relational databases and the objects they contain. We’ll move on to learning the Access interface, so you can become comfortable in the working environment. Then, we dive into how to plan, design, and create database tables. We’ll continue by importing table data from Excel, as well as manually entering table data. Sorting and filtering techniques will be explored before we move on to exploring table relationships, the key to a successful relational database. We will create database queries, forms, and reports. We’ll spend time on learning how table relationships affect queries, how to automate queries, and how to create action queries. Our advanced training starts with Advanced Report and Form Design techniques. We will learn how to create switchboards, write macros, and use Access Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) for complex automation. We will end by covering database security and customization options.

This was, by far, the best advanced Access tutorial I've seen. I've learned a lot. Thankfully, I only came across a few minor glitches (mostly errors on my part) that slowed me down a little.

In Form/Report design view (Access 2024) I can only see major gridlines, not minor gridlines as displayed in your view. I can’t seem to find any way to change the gridlines size. I tried changing from 10 to 1 in Properties, but it had no effect.


I’m wondering if the input mask in the phone number in the Customers table was affected by us importing data from the Excel file. I had to recreate the input mask. More. Because I’m using the UK version, I had to edit the input mask because it kept giving me a UK phone number type, giving me a US and UK phone number in the same table. Got there after a bit of messing about. For the remaining excercises, I left the formatting as is (£ instead of $) when formatting to currency. It's not as though you were testing me. 😉


2:05 onwards
Am I the only one who noticed when you displayed the Order Summary Record for the final time in Record view and Print Preview, the Order Date (fields) disappeared? Fortunately, this never happened to me.

Thank you! Excellent tutorial. Just have question: in a qryCustomers, if I type (ca OR or) and tab out I have the Alert "The expression you entered contains invalid syntax." If I use the right syntax ("ca" Or "or") I can run query. Where are these settings? Where I can fix it?

How bad is it that a lot of this can be done in Notion, and much, much, much, MUCH easier...? I think that so far, I've only seen one thing that makes Access better. Forms. But Notion has so much ease of entry that I'm not entirely sure which one I want to use.

Thanks for the videos. Shame the exercise files do not have a folder with the completed files; as don't have time to waste going through each individual step. Please consider not all users will be absolute novices with countless hours to spend.

EDIT - Have had to go back to 2019 files because the exercise files are inadequate.
