What type of motor mount is right for my project?

Hey, folks! Dave here from First Place Auto Parts. Thanks for joining me in the shop today. Today, we're diving into an essential topic – motor mounts. When it's time to replace yours, you've got options, and we're here to guide you through them.
**🔧 Motor Mount Basics:**
Motor mounts have a crucial job – supporting your engine and isolating it from the frame. While factory mounts do an excellent job for daily driving, they can face challenges with increased horsepower or aggressive driving, leading to unexpected failures.
**🛠️ Original Equipment Motor Mounts:**
The first type we'll discuss is the original equipment version – the steel shell with a rubber insert. Great for daily driving, these mounts excel at isolating vibrations. However, they do have a lifespan, especially considering their exposure to heat and pressure.
**🔩 Polyurethane Motor Mounts:**
Next up is the polyurethane motor mount, designed for more performance-oriented applications. Polyurethane offers less give than rubber, providing a more solid engine hold. It's a durable material, making it an excellent choice for added horsepower or aggressive driving. However, be prepared for increased chassis vibration, as polyurethane is denser than rubber.
**🔗 Solid Motor Mounts:**
The third type is the solid motor mount – a metal saddle directly mounting to the frame and block. It provides an unyielding hold but transmits every bit of engine vibration to the chassis. Not recommended for street use, but ideal for full-on drag cars seeking ultimate performance and longevity.
**🔄 Mixing and Matching:**
Consider a combination of polyurethane and solid motor mounts for the best of both worlds. Many opt for a solid mount on the driver's side and polyurethane on the passenger side to balance solid engine location with some vibration dampening.
**🛣️ Choose Based on Usage:**
Like any vehicle component, motor mounts are part of the chassis equation. Depending on your car's usage and performance needs, decide which motor mount option suits your application best.
