My 5 steps I use in preparing tree logs for fence and gate posts! There’s many different ways of doing it but I thought I’d share how I’ve prepped my logs on the ranch. I saved a lot of money using the down tree logs from last winter’s storms instead of buying pressure treated logs… I guess something good can come out of hard times and trials🤔😊.. life lesson taken👍🙏

Thank you. THIS is the exact info I was looking for to accomplish some diy yard improvements using site cut materials I have on hand.

My grandfather would mix 50/50 used motor oil and diesel in 55gal drums and would soak the logs in mixture for couple weaks

What is the name brand of a great wood perserver that you used on the bottom face of the log? I'm forced to use treated pine but want to use your method. I do have the Henry's Asphalt Emulsion Sealer & Dampproofer # 107 already also. Will this work just fine for using up my post? Thx much and ❤️ your post.

How long do you let the logs dry before doing this?

If I don’t want to stain or paint the logs, what can I use to seal them?

Thanks so much.

Good stuff 👌

You mentioned preserved tree logs? what did you do to the logs prior to the steps in the video?

You know, I hate using petroleum products in pristine soil. The old school favours used motor oil, after burning the surface of the wood, and or this asphalt stuff. Ex farmer here, and I did all that crap. I just realised that nature provides a superior product for free: pine tar. I use chopped reed grass, or manure or some vegetative product to bind the resin together. The stuff is naturally water repellant and lasts a long time. Now I am curious what it would do below grade. Thanks for the inspiration!

If you were using wood posts as just a seat kind of around a campfire in a wet environment what would you seal them with ??

Look in to scorching the wood to preserve it

I’m using those green treated posts(5” diameter) from Tractor Supply. Should I put emulsion on bottom of this post?

Small observation, there is no paint that will hide tar just above grade long term

Is this cured pine logs? You use green trees and let them dry or use dead trees? Ty
