I'm 54 yrs old.
I got silver fillings when I was 12. I still have them. Nothing loose. Never lost one. No cavities.

Close freind of mine had to have all her silver fillings removed. She was suffering from heavy metal poisoning.

The only fillings I haven't had trouble with are the silver ones. They may be older and phased out dentistry but they sure do last.

My father was a Professor of Dentistry, specialising in Prosthetics.

He did a silver filling for my mother who had been referred to him as a patient at the time, in the late 1960s. That filling lasted 50 years and even outlasted him (he passed away in 2005).

To this day I meet his old students and patients (pensioners themselves now) and they all comment on his approach towards quality work for his patients, by recalling such cases of fillings, crowns, dentures etc. lasting decades.

His old students specially keep asking me and my mother if we can give them any of his old books from his dental library so that they can refresh their knowledge of "old" techniques and teach them to their younger colleagues because these are not being taught anymore but real world experience and evidence has proven their worth.

Dentistry is an art not just science and students of dentistry should be taught accordingly how to value the materials and tools they use as well as the techniques to use them in order to support and promote their patient's health.

Progress is good but knowledge of the past can be invaluable, specially when it has proven its value in real life.

If your dentist is still using this, you need a new dentist.

I have been a Dentist since 1980. Whoever’s doing this filling has no idea what they are doing, they are just spreading the silver amalgam around like jelly on toast. It has to be compacted down firmly with pluggers. This forces the weaker constituents to the top where the are later carved off. What was done here won’t last long. I have silver amalgams in my mouth that are 50 years old. I am 70. Let’s see a composite plastic filling last more than 10 years. The amount of mercury is minuscule in all formulations the last 40 years. Mercury poisoning is a 50 year old scare tactic to the public to let some jerk dentists rip them all out and put in nice white crappy plastic. It is much more difficult, time consuming (and expensive) to do a high quality, white composite plastic filling in a back tooth. Most dentists do subpar work with them. But at least they get paid to replace them every 3-5 years. Silver amalgams are much easier, and don’t require the skill level as composite resins do to get a good result in a back tooth.

I was in Costa Rica doing a story on Dental Tourism a few years ago. I was interviewing a dentist there one day when he said, "I notice you have mercury fillings. Would you like to have them removed? That way you can experience first hand how skilled we are here in Costa Rica." I agreed and proceeded to have them all removed and replaced with a modern and safe alternative. It took a bit of time but it felt like a fog, I didn't even realized I was in, lifted from my brain. How on earth did dentistry not realize how toxic it was to fill mouths with heavy metals? BTW the dentists didn't charge me for the procedure. It was very time consuming. Their skill and safety procedures were second to none.

Silver fillings actually last! My husband has silver fillings that are 30 year a old. He has no decay under them. I have only the new composite fillings and all of them have failed in under 5 year's. I am totally disgusted with the poor quality of the composite dental fillings. Before you say it's me. I brush 3 times a day and I floss twice a day. The composite fillings shrink quickly in your teeth and decay gets under it. You can guarantee these will lead to root canals in the future.

This was a cool, educational short vid. As an 80's baby that loved every corner candy store growing up in Brooklyn, I still have 2 silver fillings from sugar cavities when young in my 2 back teeth on the bottom on each side ! They last forever!

I got silver fillings. And if I poke them with a fork, or anything metal (I work at a metal shop so like aluminum dust is common...) I get a sensation of shock from my tooth. Feels absolutely fantastic. I totally love it. Yup.

For anyone wondering the alternative: gold crowns or porcelain fillings. Do NOT get silver fillings.

I'm always amazed looking at dentist trying to make a tooth look like a tooth. Mine fillings look like skateboard ramps 🤦‍♀️

Silver fillings are the strongest that you can get, I've had silver fillings that are still in place from when I was 10 years old I'm almost 60, it's okay to use that white feeling stuff on the front of your teeth but you continually get your fillings redone if you put them on the molars

My daughter and I are allergic to metals. I told the dentist and she still did a metal filling. My daughter got a huge rash on her face for months. It was a baby tooth and fell out then the rash went away. I really struggle to trust dentist's anymore.

Lol, it's not the silver that's being phased out. It's the mercury.

I have 3 Silver amalgam fillings from 1997 while serving in the military. Never had any problems from them. My dentist a few years tried to have the amalgam replaced with composite filings but the insurance company would not pay for them to be replaced. If I had the choice I would pick durable over aesthetics each time.
