The signs and symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) can be very similar. In order to get into recovery from BPD or CPTSD, it's important to get the right signs and symptoms diagnosed. Living with borderline personality disorder or complex posttraumatic stress disorder is extremely difficult but recovery is possible.

I had EMDR and I’ll be honest, it’s a brilliant therapy but one thing that very few people warn you is how much it will bring back. In order to work through the trauma, you have to recall it out loud to your therapist, in as much detail as possible so it can be processed. So in a way you have to make yourself worse to get better. It’s a fight and a hard treatment but it’s effective. Just something to note and be ready for as I wasn’t prepared for that part. ❤️

I have both cptsd and bpd but kinda got forced into exposure style therapy. I basically didnt know i had this shit and learned to just live a very miserable life but cope? Then again most of my life ive been in an abusive household so you learn to just keep the turmoil inside. After i finally got out though I realized i havnt really been experiencing life my body was just kind of there. I have two therapists now and one specializes in trauma so we’ve been working through my childhood trauma and adult trauma and trying to expose me to more social situations and im working on grounding myself. Thanks for the video! I think focusing on something physically in front of you or what you can feel can help people who dissociate as a symptom of bpd and cptsd or similar issues.

Also im glad you, kati and med circle and others have been discussing bpd because for the longest time we were labeled monsters and even professionals have made yt videos writing the disorder off. I’m glad you’re helping de stigmatize mental illness in general so thanks!

Very interesting video. The similarities between BPD and PTSD are very confusing, because if the trauma that is often involved with BPD. You did a very good job dealing with the subject.

I have c-ptsd and have done emdr. Emdr helped me to process a lot of things and I stopped having constant flashbacks and cognitive dissonance (as bad). I still have anxiety and am taking venlafaxine and it has helped me a lot. I am not optimistic about ever being “normal” feeling but counseling, emdr, and medication have helped me to be in a spot where I can be open to seeing, learning and putting up boundaries instead of being in constant fight or flight mode

I have had a little bit of emdr, but I lost my insurance and am unable to do it right now. I have cptsd as well as BPD, so I’m really looking forward to this. I’ve learned a lot from you since finding your channel. So thank you!

My CPTSD trust issue is trusting the wrong people. I'm a smart guy but I have huge blind spots.

Around 3 years ago I was diagnosed with BPD as you have to be 18 to receive said dx (usually) it was apparent that the symptoms have been around much longer, essentially since I was a small child (which I believe was after the first incident of trauma, now a repressed memory that is starting to make its way to the surface in the form of flashback) Over the years more and more traumas occurred and my symptoms got worse. Then at the beginning of this year, I moved away from the place where my traumas happened. I have barely any contact with my abusers who were family members and I rarely see them anymore. Oddly, once I moved the more remarked "BPD" symptoms essentially disappeared. Basically all but 3 of them. But I still get the flashbacks and have other symptoms of PTSD (Which I am not diagnosed with so I don't say I have it) This is without therapy, as I just don't have the resources in my town to go right now. Just self reflection/help/education and escaping the bad memories. Is it possible that its in remission ? Or possibly a misdiagnosis ? or a co-morbid dx ? I'm going to try and talk to a professional but I just thought I'd ask in case anyone had experienced anything similar. *Edit - to add to this, I have done DBT in the past but I found it wasn't helpful for me

EMDR is not always the best treatment for CPTSD. Because of all multiple traumas. It actually has a much better success rate for PTSD, trauma of singular nature. Also, there are a lot of EMDR therapist that have atteneded seminars but NOT trained/certified in the full training. Do your research when it comes to EMDR therapy. More harm than good can be done.

I have a diagnosis of ptsd but my therapist and I have discussed the complex part separately as cptsd isn't a diagnosis yet in the ICD-10. We use DBT as it's not just helpful for people with bipolar and borderline, but also ptsd. I would say one of the bigger differences between cptsd and borderline is that with cptsd, the feeling of self worthlessness is consistent. I don't get highs where I feel like I'm on top of the world and fantastic. I'll have days where I feel like I have motivation to do things, but it never erases my perspective that is consistently negative. That is a part of my therapy and I'm trying to change that. I was concerned for a while that I did have bipolar or borderline (the latter especially) but my therapist has stated that she is absolutely sure I don't and that my symptoms are trauma related. Either way, I still relate to the struggles that people with borderline have and that is why I'm thankful for DBT.

I do wish youd talk about psychotic disorders. Theres so much misinformation out there and most videos on the subject are either inaccurate or too long for a sufferer to sit through and vet (psychosis kills ability to focus) and your videos tend to be straight to the point so i think you could make a good video on the subject.

About 2 years ago now I was homeless because CPS had court ordered me out of my home and away from my husband and children. I was diagnosed with a ptsd and bpd as well as depression and anxiety and post partum psychosis. I went through dbt and emdr as well as group and individual therapy. I made myself do the 90 in 90 at AA. And now I'm back in college pursuing my bachelor's in Social Work and then my LCSW. I've been sober for 20 months and I'm home with my kids too. My addiction and mental illnesses are by all accounts in remission! If you ever want an interview with someone who's been through these things and even more let me know hun!

I have bpd. About 3 weeks ago I was asked a few questions to see if i has pstd when I went for a assessment to see if I can start abuse councilling. They sent me a text last week to say I was put on the waiting list for councilling & Suport- they said places are full at the moment & they will contact me when a place comes avalible & reassess the situation. I also went to a dbt group about 3 or 4 years ago now. I’m really pleased you’ve done videos about bpd, I’ll have to watch them

Currently going through therapy similar to EMDR. It’s called CRM invented by Lisa Schwartz. It’s still early days yet but I feel like gradually I’m changing for the better. Love your content Chris. You’re the only channel that has actually moved me to action.

I can't support the Patreon today, but am very happy of your success!

As a CPTSD person, I would like to get a job but feel very insecure I can keep up with a "normal schedule." Do you find working for yourself more accommodating? (For the crash, burn, energy, crash, burn.) We are both in a same community online.

Thanks for the video. I already saw Katie's and I agree that covering the same thing differently can really help. My current diagnosis is Autism spectrum disorder with ADHD, Depression, Anxiety and PTSD. Though of course it's hard to rule out BPD and my therapist often uses the term as we go through DBT. Yes one on one, I learn too fast for average classes. Intelligence is very isolating. Anyway I do plan on bringing it up to her but I think the ASD is more likely to be the primary reason for me having emotional regulation problems. It really throws a wrench in the works. Which fascinates me in the third person.
I can understand with my brain so easily but actually feeling and understanding emotionally is different.
