Why Engineers Don't Vlog (or film their projects)

I've noticed that on YouTube and with people I know, hardly anybody films their personal projects. Why is it that Elon musk doesn't vlog his work at SpaceX for example? In this video I wanted to share my perspective after making videos about a few of my projects and why they have been the most difficult type of video I have ever made. I'm still figuring out a strategy for making these types of videos and that's why I decided to share it with you guys. However, I do believe these types of videos are the most valuable videos I can make, I just need to figure out a more sustainable system and I want more people to film their own projects as well :) Also share in the comments your opinions on why we don't see more engineering type of videos on YouTube.

When you have a 144hz gaming monitor, not to play games, to but scroll through your 4000 lines of code

would totally watch 40 hours footage of you developing something, tbh

I understand the struggle. I can't tell you how many times I've come close to using an if else statement in a casual conversation.

Programming is weird. You have to be isolated for large amounts of time to focus and get work done and it doesn't seem like many people have understanding or compassion for what you do. Even more reason for software engineers to have more fun with side projects that showcase communication skills. Thumbs up.

I used to watch you when you made Minecraft videos and I've been enjoying the content you've been uploading on this channel so much more as of late

Just wanted to say that watching few of your videos, made me start my own little project using arduino and other basic stuff. Keep it up man!

Hi from Spain Devon! I'm also a software engineer and i love how you make your videos and how you make research and try to make things that sound impossible when you say it at first. I hope your channel grows as well as your talent! Keep sharing your work bro you're insanely good. I declare myself a new sub of the channel :)

There are a lot of software engineering live streams though

A advantage of telling the viewers about roadblocks is they might know a way to solve it.

I feel like another reason why engineers don’t film their projects is because they can be easily stolen and copied..

Literally only watched 3 of your videos and I already love your style. I’ve never in my life watched a programming software video ever. You make it seem interesting as fuck man. If you made like a series about you have a good old crack at a project and showing to your subs like the roadblocks and problems and shit you have to solve to work around them, that would be so awesome.

I'm a Computer Engineer Student in Portugal and I truly admire all the effort you put on your projects and videos. Subscribed and clicked on the bell button so I don't lose a video from you.

I think sharing your personal struggles and unsexy work or "how i ****ed up learning to do XYZ videos" are really great. I struggle with the same issues as well except some of my work is unsexy, inconsistent, niche, and confidential so the best I can do is just blogging. I find your videos to be inspiring though, you capture exactly how I would approach vlogging though so it feels like I am learning from your successes and mistakes.

Separating code from reality is an issue I think every engineer goes through. It’s really hard explaining code/your work to non-engineers. As an engineering major, I absolutely love watching your videos. I think that the lack of engineering vlogs on YouTube make engineers feel a bit disconnected from others because we feel as though we have no one to connect to. It’s nice to actually connect with content creators like you, even if there are only a handful of you guys on the internet. Keep doing what you’re doing.

You're right, or should I say I agree with your point of view, Devon. What I also appreciate about this video in particular is that it shows just how much time, dedication, effort and thought goes into you being able to produce the videos that you do. It can make one truly appreciate the process and not just the refined results of your final work. It's really awesome. Thank you!

I've come across your channel very recently. I love the fact that you don't stay away from projects, but you give into them and try to see what you end up with. Huge inspiration to focus more on projects which are indeed a ton of fun. Cool channel 👏🏼

It's funny you made this video because one of the things that stands out to me about your videos is how "sexy" you make it look. It comes across as effortless yet whenever I code or work on projects I can get stuck on one roadblock for days like you said. Because of that it can almost be disheartening sometimes to think it's not the same for others. I really wish you uploaded that battery video because I think one of the coolest parts of being an engineer is those roadblocks and overcoming them. Show people the struggle (a little) and even if you don't end up finishing the project you can say that and leave us with a cliffhanger... Not sure if that makes sense but anyways, I'd enjoy seeing some more WIP projects

Hey Devon I rarely comment but what I'm trying to say is I really appreciate you uploading all these videos, it gives me a lot of motivation to continue coding. Especially when I keep getting stuckkk
