US marine, this is particularly true for the PFT 3 mile run. Usualñy when we start running I begin at a decently slow pace and almost everyone passes me, but after like 2 mins into the run I start passing everyone who is already running out of breath and by the time the run ends I would have pass half of everyone who was previously in front of me with a 20:45 3 mile run time. And its not just about the heart rate but the lung expansion too, starting slow allowed your lungs to warm up before starting to breathe harshly so they don't get hurt. Make sure you get well hidrated and rested the previous 2 days before the run and warm up and stretch before running long distances too.

I'm 44 and been running practically my entire life. One thing I will mention is that there should be a cadence to your breathing.. a comfortable fixed breathing cadence and one thing that took me years to figure out is to Run loose and relaxed mentally. Like literally put your mind in a relaxed state. Your body will respond accordingly and stay loose. Running "hard" or running aggressive or running forcefully is not the way. Running should be fun not laboring. Don't fixate your mind on pain or uncomfortablilities or how much left you have to run. Release your mind and be comfortable because when you are tense is when injuries happen.

Peace

Could you make a more in depth video about this?

Tip to people that may be breathing wrong on runs: When you are in cardio, your breathing should still be relaxed and deep, it is easy to think it is better to take quick shallow breaths, but it isn’t. No matter where you are in your run, you could probably benefit by dedicating your conscious efforts to control and steady breathing.

Breathing is important, so is stretching and a pre-work out. Nutrition and hydration, salt for cramps. Then learning how to push past the pain in your abs/ribs, if you can do a mile with that pain it melts away and you're able to push past 5 miles easy. Just 7 minutes a day will change everything

varsity athlete (track, swim, etc.) here - essentially, don’t go oxygen deficient. Take it slower than you think you need to in the start, then crank it up. This does exactly what was said in your video, so props to you!

I did this on my last long run and I was able to go over nine miles without walking, when before I was struggling to get six. Thank you so much!

That’s why warming up is important before a hard workout.

I have asthma and if I have a hard time breathing in and out just through my mouth, I find it helpful to inhale through my nose, with my mouth open and my tongue to the roof of my mouth, and exhale through my mouth (my tongue releases from the roof of my mouth when exhaling). During races/high intensity workouts, or when I can’t get enough oxygen just from my nose, I breathe in through my nose AND mouth by inhaling through my nose AND sucking in air quickly through my mouth at the same time, and then I exhale through my mouth. Hope this helps!

I totally agree! When I was running competitions, I used to start in the back, and when the gun went off, I would walk. Then start a slow jog. I would make sure I was the LAST on the start, then… I challenged myself to beat the person in front of me. At my pace, and for long runs I would cadence myself with singing. If I was running too fast for that part of the race, I wouldn’t be able to sing and run. At the right spot in the race/run (aka, last mile kick), change the song, kick up the pace gradually such that for the last 100 to 200 meters I’m going all out and leaving EVERYTHING I HAVE OUT THERE.

Singing worship to my God, King, and creator. Just him and me. Don’t worry about time, don’t worry about finish line, just putting it all out there in worship to God. One Breath at a time, one step at a time.

Just run everyday and you'll eventually build up the endurance 🤷‍♂️ your heart will get stronger 💪.

That advice works for heart rate, not breathing. Breathing is affected by pace. I doesn't matter if you start fast or slow, at a certain pace(different for everyone), your breathing will change. Once you hit your threshold, you'll start breathing harder.
