Instead of using a hammer or a pad it is better to make a specific pad that fits exactly with the edge. This pad is made from one piece of laminate flooring and a metal plate to protect it.

Why the negative comments? This is a great little tip when in a pinch for time or money.

dfosterbrew even with a proper tap block and expensive laminate i do it this way aswell. its very easy even with a good tap block to mash up the joints or edges this is the best way to do it with or without a tap block

I always use a scrap piece for a tap block.
Thanks for the tip of using a metal clip for longevity 👍

Yes, but in many cases the flange is very fragile and is broken even with a rubber block. With this method you apply the force in a secure way that you can hit it very hard without any problem.

Great tip. Thank you. Why pay ten bucks for something when you can use the material you already have!

With cheap, crappy laminate this is true. With a better quality product, however, it can withstand a good amount of water. My kitchen was flooded and we had no problems because the joints were tight and the laminate was more expensive. We used to have hardwood and solid bamboo flooring. Our dog destroyed both with his nails. Good laminate = no scratches.

Watched a guy do my floor install, which is all coming back up by the way, he would hit it so hard, unbelievable how someone, even experienced can ruin an entire install and not see such simple errors that degrade the look and ruin the material.

I dont know it is a kind of mounting guide I found. Any iron angle will do the job. Google "iron angle" and go to images. Then look in a store something similar. Even a small block of plastic. The objective is not to destroy de the block of wood in a few hammer blows.

I tried to install these a few weeks ago, and could not find the magic angle after an hour of trying. Was under a time constraint for furniture to arrive, so put them into storage, and will try again when I move out.

you could also buy a click lock with the valinge t & g (drop and lock. or buy an engineered wood floor and glue down.

simple answer to the problem is not to hit the laminate at all. just use a wedge to lift the last board up about 15 degrees and snap it in. i lay floors for a living and i dont use a hammer on laminate.

Why spend $10 when using a piece that's being tossed anyway, works just as good. I did the same thing when I installed mine. Just took a scrap piece and used it for my tapping block. They already got enough of my money when I bought the flooring....The cheap shall inherit the earth! And all you folks with so much disposable cash will be coming to us to learn how to survive...hehehehe

Or you could cut the lip off the first row and lay the boards the other direction... then you don't have to tap on the lip side at all and a tapping block will work fine after that.

they have special tools for this lol. Blue hawk sells them at lowes for I think $12 with spacers.

Cut the fragile flange off and strike the new squared off section ...easy.
