Change can be challenging. Start small if suddenly implementing health and fitness into your life seems too overwhelming. You do not have to do EVERYTHING at once. And it doesn’t have to be all or none. A lot of people get into trouble with that approach. 

I encourage an approach of something is better than nothing when it comes to movement of any kind. When it comes to nutrition, make as many good choices as possible. Nothing in life is perfect, so stop setting an unobtainable standard for yourself. 

Working as a nurse, I cared for people who were overcoming catastrophic cardiac events. The patients often (though not always) shared some self-reflection. I heard a lot of regret from people- “I wish I’d stopped smoking years ago” or “I wish I’d never let myself get so out of shape.” 

Health is something we often take for granted until it’s in jeopardy. But it’s a lot like a retirement account. If you aren’t actively working on it and contributing to it, it won’t be there for you when you are older and need it. 

You can start by implementing some minor changes. No cost or equipment is required. Just start adding steps to your day. Almost everyone has a phone or smartwatch these days. If you do, start paying attention to your daily steps. Set new goals for yourself and make little changes in your day to help yourself hit those goals. Stop looking for those immediate results and start thinking long-term!
