I'm running both Logic and Studio One 5 and haven't had any issues with plugins loading or SSD drives. The Mac Studio blows away my previous Mac and it was a great machine.

Tip for the mouse problem: I used to have connectivity problems with my old Magic Mouse. It was a problem with the batteries having too much space in the battery compartment. A piece of paper folded a few times wrapped around the batteries resulted in a lot less connectivity problems for me.

I can explain your issues :

1) the drive issue is a permission issue. You can fix it if you change the permissions of the main folder and folders underneath on your external drive to all users as read and write. Since external devices don’t work as a root folder permissions are necessary.

2) Plugin loading in Pro Tools… You probably work in Rosetta Mode and that’s why you have this long loading times. If you would try a native DAW, you will not see any issues like that.

3)Mouse issue: put some paper in it since the battery issue is an old one… the new Magic Mouse would be the better solution… one charge is enough for a month and you don’t have connection issues at all.

4) you can fix the fan „issue“ with an external tool and set the fan rpm to 1000-1100 without having issues under max load. You can use software like Macsfancontrol for it.

I was having the same hard drive issue on both my Mac Studio and Intel Mac Mini when I updated to the latest pro tools. I was prompted by PT to set my hard drive to “R” (which I think literally means record lol 😒) inside PT via the workspace (I think) to able to record to my drive. That solved it for me.

What I've discovered on my Mac Studio is that the rear Thunderbolt/UBS ports are defective. They cause consistent drop out, freezes, crashes and more fun stuff. The front ports are All Good, but the rear ports are a disaster. And I need those ports to work perfectly. This is my first new Mac in many years (I have so so so many Macs but in the last few years Apple appeared to lose their way and I ended up building my own Hacks instead to great effect), but have been wanting a reason to move back to their hardware - and the M chip was it. Unfortunately, after many dozens hours of tests and searches, I've concluded this is a very common issue, not likely related to software and despite how much I want to love it and boy do I ever love the M chip and GPU engines, my Studio is ...well much more a Lemon than an Apple.

1:35 if you open a workspace in reaper and then open volumes, you will see all your drives. For drives you want to write/record to, make sure to select the R in front of the mode column. R makes it so you can record to them!

I have 2 Mac Studios in use for different aspects of production. One of them had some issues out of the box, specifically with USB ports. Some devices would work on the front USB-C ports but not on one of the rear USB-A ports. Other devices would work on the USB-A ports, but not the front USB-C ports. The other Mac Studio did not have those problems and all devices have worked on all ports. I took the malfunctioning Mac in for service and they replaces practically everything: Logic Board (10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 32GB), USB-C Ports (front), and

Running a 2014 Mini, the Magic Mouse gives me the same disconnecting issues you’re having. Thankfully it’s not my studio machine, and it’s good to know it’s a widespread issue instead of isolated.

You should get the rechargeable mouse Magic Mouse 2, it takes few minutes to charge if you are in a hurry, when Magic Mouse is fully charged it can run for about a month or more between charges. I was thinking the same way, but when I got it few years ago it proved it wasn’t a big issue. Thanks for your video.

the plugin loading up delay is rosetta. once its in it loads instant each time. That should go away once PT is native.

Try the new Magic Mouse. Using all day, battery lasts about a month. If you run out of battery, you can charge it for a couple minutes and go for another hour. Maybe completely charges in an hour. The old one like you have, it used to feel like the batteries were always going dead. Also the pairing, plug it into the usb cable and it's paired. Want to use it on another Mac, same thing and it only takes a couple seconds.

I just bought a mac studio, the basic 32 memory 500 gb and a samsung solid 1tb external harddrive and I have never been so happy, I use logic, luna, melodyne studio and I have no problem recording everything on the external harddrive.

Guarantee you that beachball issue on the plug-in initial instance is a graphics issue. Could be Rosetta related but Try changing your display color settings to sRGB. That’s what PT likes best.

Hey Colt, long-time ProTools user here and also an Avid Certified Instructor for ProTools. You might want to check the Disk Permissions IN Protools. Navigate to Window -> New Workspace -> Default and open the Workspace browser. Check if your SSD drive you are using to record on has the permissions set to "R" and not "P". Occasionally, PT might glitch out and change the permissions for whatever reasons. I've experienced it once even though my settings were all the same and I didn't change anything in PT. I hope this eliminates the possibility of that setting in PT itself. This will prevent anything from recording onto the disk itself in PT if the permissions are changed from "R" to "P".

I am running Luna and it’s been flawless so far. Loving mac studio. All my programs and samples are on the onboard drive 2G and then I have a fast SSD outboard drive for song/music files. Also got 64 gigs or Ram. I’m unstoppable. Lol

ProTools is definitely janky running on M1 because it's in Rosetta. Some plugins, won't work properly at all (e.g. Acustica). Who knows when Avid will get their sh*t together... they're already way behind by not being M1 native and I don't even know if it will happen this year, all this for the annual price of having access to updates, but not this, the most important thing they should be focusing on.

Should have purchased the 4TB model and would not need those external drives

Hard drive issue: There is the possibility for some users (although I’m sure you checked this) that they simply need to define the drives in ProTools as record drives. PT doesn’t automatically record to all drives. This would be evident to someone who finds that recording works on the internal drive but not an external drive.
