I'd be interested in a video that looks at the best upgrade path for late 27" 5K (typically 3.8GHz Core i7) iMac users doing moderate workloads. Given it was a $2, 500 solution with a 5K screen (keyboard & mouse) included, what is the upgrade path. Seems it would be an M1 Max Mac Studio ($1999) with an LG 27" screen? Or does the Studio Display 'almost a computer' hint at an eventual 27" iMac replacement?

Thanks a lot! I followed your advice (you already assumed it right in the beginning before they were released) and ordered the base M1 Ultra to replace my mac pro. Have it for about two weeks now and couldn't be happier!

Max, perhaps you should keep it until the software optimisations are done? If so, you could see a 33% increase (assuming linear scaling) compared to the 48 core. This is significant for video editing! Plus, if the 48c also benefits from SW optimisations, the jump would be more like 50-60% compared to the current tested 48c!or get the M2 Extreme 😀

I ordered the base model with RAM and SSD upgrades. That still almost brought me into range of the Ultra, but the bulk of that was the SSD upgrade. I find that to my workflow, running out of space on that fast internal SSD is the primary bottleneck I wish to avoid.

That said, if there's ONE thing Apple could have done to improve the Studio for me, it would've been a user-accessible M.2 slot, even if only for secondary internal storage.

Would be interested in comparing the non-Pro (but higher end) Intel iMac to both the Mac mini and Mac Studio. Esp. for how it behaves with editing photos in CaptureOne (responsives on dragging sliders) and development.
