My little rant about the *APPLE STUDIO DISPLAY MONITOR!*

Today, I performed the update on the Apple Studio Display and encountered the same problem. I searched on YouTube and found your channel, where I heard about all the difficulties you faced. It was like a reality check for me because I live in the Dominican Republic, and even though there are Apple dealerships here, it would take me weeks to resolve this issue. In my desperation, after a couple of hours, it occurred to me to connect the Apple Display to my old mid-2017 iMac, and surprise! The Apple Display connected as a second monitor. Then I disconnected it from the iMac and connected it to the Mac Ultra, and it worked as if nothing had happened. I'm not tech-savvy at all, and I don't understand what actually happened.

Who else came here after the DankPods video?

Three Studio Displays have failed the same way since late May 2022: The first time power is cut to the unit (unplugging from wall or UPS), it comes up in a update (firmware) cycle that is never successful. Following the instructions from Apple, I can trigger the process to update the Studio Display, which appears to run, but ultimately returns to the error message. I have been extremely careful when unplugging the power cable and the thunderbolt cable (Mac Studio is powered off). Apple initially tried to trouble shoot the problem; now it just gives me a new monitor. This is not good for the end user or for Apple.

The exact same problem happened to my Studio Display. I was told to bring it in to an Apple store, they looked at it for 3 days, and finally reported that they didn't know what was wrong with it. When bumped up to a higher level engineering tech, he was authorized to give me a brand new one. I'm a happy camper now, and glad it only took them 3 days to respond with a new display. My comments back to Apple was that the customer should have been their first priority and given a new one immediately, then they could have taken their own time to troubleshoot it... especially for the price we paid for it.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION? (Reliable for me so far) OK So I have 3 of these monitors and a Mac Studio Ultra. When the first firmware update came out I thought there was some problem with me having all three monitors plugged in at the same time. One updated, but two produced the famous black support/restore screen. Spoke to a friend in IT, who suggested that I tried doing the updates individually. But that didn’t help either – after over 45 minutes of waiting for something different to happen I decided I was pursuing the proverbial path “insanity”.
Then it occurred to me that these monitors have their own iPad chips in them. So on that hunch, I went ahead and:
- turned everything off, disconnected all of the monitors from the power source
- Connected ONLY a faulty monitor by USB—USB and also Thunderbolt—Thunderbolt
- Reconnected monitor to power source
- Booted up the Mac Studio

At first it was still showing the support/restore screen, then a few minutes (6-8 min) it blinked, but still showing the same thing, then a minute later it started the whole cycle again showing the ellpses. Less than a minute later, my regular screen showed up!

I followed this procedure for the second set of firmware updates to. I start out with one at a time. If it fails, I just connect the USB cable and unplug and get it to do its thing that way. So far it’s been reliable. But of course, your mileage may vary. Hope it helps anyone here, because it was, unbelievably frustrating for hours before!

Same problem. Brand new monitor. Delivered last week. Had it working shortly before I moved it to the other side of my room. I booted up, it doesn't come on and I have no idea why. There are tragically few options to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

If you ask me, it's TOTALLY LAME not to have a power button. The probably thought they'd be clever, but it turns out to me having less confidence in this hardware. I guess I'll have to go back to apple to try and swap it for a new one.

I bought a second Studio Display from a liquidation business and it unfortunately has a problem. It turns on when plugged and charges my Mac but is blank. After research I do think this is an easy fix if I can take it to Apple but I only have 2 days until I can return it for a refund so it seems unlikely I’ll be able to before then 😢

Update, My Studio Display blew up yesterday, belching smoke for 6 minutes before a final loud bang. Only lasted 18 months, very scary failure and I did get it on video. Posted pictures of the failure on my community tab and what to look out for before this failure. I can't post a video because I now have no display.

Same for me. Second new monitor in two weeks. Both have failed on me within 5 minutes of turning on and the Firmware update running (Not sure on version, but this is June 2023). Something really wrong here. I've spent 7 hours now on support chats, trying to fix ("on and off again" is the only option) and then driving four trips to Apple Store and Apple Technician. Not at all happy.

same happened to me. i literally left the monitor hooked up to my laptop (after i logged in) for about 10 minutes and the monitor started updating. It worked itself out and rebooted. It's strange the way it works, but those are the instructions on their website too.

I watched your video. I just opened my brand new expensive display and it doesn’t work. Apple care doesn’t know why my monitor doesn’t work. They want me to bring it in. Who has time for this. So frustrating.

Also having a similar problem, but not aware of any updates and I didn’t initiate anything (and auto updates are switched off). Monitor occasionally shows 3 dots for just a few seconds then goes black. Tried everything yesterday including call to Apple support who say the only solution is for me to bring it in. Easier said than done! Trying 2 cables now but it’s not working.

You made the right decision to post this video documenting your problem with the display. Anyone else who develops a similar issue can reference this video.

I’m having the same issue. Didn’t hours on the phone with 3 different techs who didn’t know anything but were very nice, until finally told to take it in to a store tomorrow. I have a huge project due Friday so this is not good. It’s brand new only 4 months old. I spent $4, 000 on this system including the Mac Studio. This should not be an issue!

I just had this happen. apple support said I needed to bring it into the store.... I really didn't want to do this and kept looking online for answers. I found someone mention - Remove any devices plugged into the Studio Display ports before updating it. I had a keyboard plugged in also. I removed it, then I removed the thunderbolt that connects my monitor to my laptop and almost immediately it put up the ellipsis and finished the update, and all is good. Saved me a trip to the apple store!!

I got the same recovery mode error after trying to install the firmware update while running MacOS Sonoma Public Beta on my MacBook, and the support article you mentioned did not help at all. I also spoke to an Apple support representative who advised me to take the unit to a retail store. I didn't want to do that (obviously), and what came to my mind later was to download the MacOS Ventura build from the App Store and see if I could downgrade from the public beta to the 'official build', restore my data using Time Machine, and see if I could get the firmware update notification again once I'd done all that. But... surprise, surprise, while the software was downloading from the App Store, the display decided to check for updates again, and after a minute or two my MacBook recognised the extended display without any problem. No, I don't know if this 'check' happened because I triggered the OS software update from the App Store or because it 'just' wanted to do so, but I'm glad I didn't have to take it back to the store for an inspection. One thing I'm going to do for sure is buy a UPS for the display, just like the other guy in the comments. I did not have this problem with the display firmware update when I was running MacOS Ventura.

Same happened with me today, because of the display upgrade.

I am having the same problem + flickering. After 4 visits to my apple store and them keeping it every time for at least 4 days they are now basically replacing everything except the serial #. Next stop for me is a new display as I also have Apple care and have only owned it since 12/15/23 and most of that time it has been not working or at the apple store.
