After a long run of eleven successful seasons, the hit NBC show Cheers sadly came to an end, which left many diehard fans brokenhearted and without a favorite TV sitcom. Characters that audiences had become attached to and had fallen deeply in love with were suddenly gone and the bar that you could go to where everybody knew your name was closed for good.

Now, we all know TV shows get canceled all the time. That’s not anything out of the norm. This is usually due to low ratings, when there are feuds between the show’s cast members, or when a network says that it’s time to go.

But when a show is doing well with ratings and audiences are still invested in the storylines and characters (as was the case with Cheers), it can seemingly make little sense as to why a hit and beloved TV show goes off the air and off our TV screens.

That’s basically what happened with the comedy Cheers. The show was a fan favorite among viewers and a sitcom that many people consider an all-time absolute classic. It even had a highly coveted spot during NBC’s ‘Must See TV’ lineup. So why would a successful show like Cheers suddenly come to an end instead of carrying on for eleven (okay, maybe that’s a few too many) more seasons?

I loved every episode when it was first aired. 40 years later, I'm still watching the re-runs, can not get enough of it. Diane Chambers or not the show continued to rock. 👍👍👍❤❤❤

Shelly Long's departure was the beginning of the end?

It wasn't even half-way done. She was in the show for 5 years and it went on for another 6 after she left.

Is there some reason you totally skipped over Kirstie Alley's character, Rebecca Howe, as if she didn't exist?

Didn't think that they could ever replace Coach, R I P. But Woody's character was one of the best character fill ins in television history

The funniest line in any

Diane: (having been thrown overboard after refusing Sam's proposal) "Sam, me a line!"
Sam: "What's a nice girl like you doing in an ocean like this."

Pure genius.

The best sitcom ever written! My favorite episode was when Sam kicked Diane's apartment door down and he thought she had called in the cops! Intelligent writing about human relationships. The best in comedy and writing!

Cheers was scheduled to end when it did. There was no intrigue.

Cheers went on for 11 seasons. That's a massive success for any sitcom, when most last for around seven. I don't think the show abruptly ended or died a slow death as was suggested in the video. I think it simply ran its course. 11 years is a long time.

Holy wow I never knew the show Fraser was a spin-off of Cheers. Cheers was before my time so barely got to see any of it just recently discovered how great of a show it was.

All the episodes were good. I started watching Cheers when I was 11 years old. Then moved on to Fraiser. These have to be the best written and acted comedies from the USA. I'm British and the humour is very close ours. I wouldn't be surprised if the writers were influenced in some way by British humour. Superb 👍

Loved the series finale...that finale conversation in the bar always resonated with me. Also enjoyed the episode with Harry the Hat teaming up with Coach to take down that guy in a game of poker.

I have a lot of favorite episodes from memory- One of my favorites off the top of my head is the one where Frasier meets Lilith. Their marriage did turn out to be a horrible train wreck though.

Diane's exit from the show was NOT AT ALL the 'beginning of the end'- 'Cheers' basically went from strength to strength without her. It's original heyday was when her character was on.

Was a child when this show came out. Watched it every week, own every episode and have always adored it. ....favourite episode was the one where Sam and Woody compete to get the first kiss from Rebecca.

THE SCENE THAT TOOK CHEERS OFF THE AIR, IT WASN'T A SCENE, IT WAS BECAUSE TED WHO PLAYED SAM LEFT..What happened was Ted Danson, the actor who portrayed Sam Malone in Cheers, didn't want to be in the show anymore after spending 11 years as that character. The show's creators knew they couldn't run the show without one of it's most memorable characters, and so stopped making it once Ted Danson left.
