Push ups are a great exercise to do, especially if you are working out from home. The gym has so much equipment to use, but when you workout from home, you have limited options. It is a great overall exercise to do, but you can injure yourself if you don’t do them properly. If you do them the right way and do them for a long time, you can really build a big, good looking chest. Let’s get started with the mistakes you may be making when doing push ups, and improve your form to build a bigger chest at home.

Mistake #1: RANGE OF MOTION. You need to make sure you have enough range of motion. It doesn’t matter what exercise you do, the more range of motion, the more you are going to work the muscle group. Don’t sag your hips because then you can’t go as low. Have a flat back and hands shoulder width apart, to get a deeper range of motion and a deeper stretch in your chest.

Mistake #2: HAND PLACEMENT. Make sure your hands are not too far out in front of you. You want them to be directly under your shoulders, to make sure you are actually doing a “push up”. If you want to change the emphasis on where you are hitting your chest, you can bring them closer together or farther apart.

Mistake #3: HAND ORIENTATION. You don’t want your hands or fingers to be pointed inward. This forces your elbows to flare out, and you do not want that. You want your fingers to be pointed straight forward or just slightly outward.

Experiment with different forms because you may have had an injury that causes you to need to adjust an exercise a certain way. Just make sure you are still utilizing good form, if you make any changes.

Thxs, Mark and great info.video. I keep tweeking my shoulders lifting heavy objects not working out. I started warming up and stretching before, doing pushups to avoid any injury. Shalom.

Mark - you might mention that rotating push up bars are a great way to keep from bending your hands 90 degrees from your forearms and they allow muscle rotation as you lower and rise back up. My ortho doc said not to bend my hands for a traditional push up. It’s risking joint aggravation. Your tips, however, were spot on!

Great info on p/u. I follow all of these plus I tend out to put less pressure on my thumbs and index fingers 60 yo Army veteran still doing daily pt at least 5 days a week

Personally, I never lock out on every rep, like those that bench, the last rep I'll go straight but not during the exercise. Do you feel that it's harder on the joints to go straight every rep or does it not bother your elbow/inner arm?

Thank you, Mark, for another great video with much useful information. FYI, I've found a tool, "The Perfect Pushup, " to be especially helpful with hand placement. You can actually adjust your hand placement during the movement. It also provides additional range of motion for emphasis on pec development. My age is; well, a little older than you. I would be interested in your assessment of the product in promoting the correct form when doing this important exercise. Thanks again!

9/2022 video stating you are 59 years old.
Yesterday I watched a 60+ video where you stated you are 62 years old?
What gives? Do you make older videos and repost them later/again?
How old are you? You have many videos for the plus 60 set.
