Push ups are a great exercise to do, especially if you are working out from home. The gym has so much equipment to use, but when you workout from home, you have limited options. It is a great overall exercise to do, but you can injure yourself if you don’t do them properly. If you do them the right way and do them for a long time, you can really build a big, good looking chest. Let’s get started with the mistakes you may be making when doing push ups, and improve your form to build a bigger chest at home.
Mistake #1: RANGE OF MOTION. You need to make sure you have enough range of motion. It doesn’t matter what exercise you do, the more range of motion, the more you are going to work the muscle group. Don’t sag your hips because then you can’t go as low. Have a flat back and hands shoulder width apart, to get a deeper range of motion and a deeper stretch in your chest.
Mistake #2: HAND PLACEMENT. Make sure your hands are not too far out in front of you. You want them to be directly under your shoulders, to make sure you are actually doing a “push up”. If you want to change the emphasis on where you are hitting your chest, you can bring them closer together or farther apart.
Mistake #3: HAND ORIENTATION. You don’t want your hands or fingers to be pointed inward. This forces your elbows to flare out, and you do not want that. You want your fingers to be pointed straight forward or just slightly outward.
Experiment with different forms because you may have had an injury that causes you to need to adjust an exercise a certain way. Just make sure you are still utilizing good form, if you make any changes.
