SpaceX Just Revealed Landing both Starship and Booster on Droneship!
SpaceX never stops breaking boundaries. Ten years ago, they stunned the world by vertically landing a Falcon 9 rocket on a sea platform, known as a droneship. Now, they're pushing the envelope again with their next-generation rocket, Starship.
Yes, SpaceX has ambitious plans to recover their massive Starship rocket in the middle of the ocean. But how exactly do they plan to achieve this? What potential benefits does this bring? And what challenges must they overcome to make this a reality?
Let's dive into these questions in today's episode of Great SpaceX.
SpaceX Just Revealed Landing both Starship and Booster on Droneship!
SpaceX has completed four integrated flights of Starship, demonstrating a stable ascent process and gradual improvements in navigating the harsh re-entry process. With this solid foundation, SpaceX is now targeting the next critical milestone: landing.
When it comes to landing, most people think of the Mechazilla Arm, the method SpaceX is primarily focused on and plans to implement in Flight 5. However, looking further into the future, SpaceX is considering multiple landing methods for Starship. One notable method is landing on a droneship, similar to the technique currently used for the Falcon 9.
SpaceX Just Revealed Landing both Starship and Booster on Droneship!
This method has moved from concept to a concrete plan, now under consideration by the FAA. The proposal, included in the FAA's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Starship operations in Florida, outlines plans for “landing the Super Heavy booster downrange in the Atlantic Ocean on a droneship” and “landing Starship on a droneship.”
Starship will launch from Launch Complex 39A in Florida, marking the beginning of its ambitious journey. After the initial launch, the two stages will separate. The Super Heavy booster will land on a droneship in the Gulf of Mexico, a strategic maneuver that SpaceX has already executed successfully in previous missions. Meanwhile, Starship will continue its flight, aiming to complete its mission objectives before returning to Earth.
Upon return, Starship will land on a droneship in a designated ocean area. The FAA's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Starship Florida does not specify these locations in detail. However, another FAA document, the Draft Tiered Environmental Assessment for SpaceX Starship at Boca Chica Texas, outlines several potential landing sites.

To be resolved, thank you.

This all sounds amazing and I know SpaceX can do it

This shouldn't have to be said, but i appreciate you using your actual voice and not an AI reader.

Nothing was just revealed, and haven’t you already covered this?

Boosters lmight be landing offshore in the test phase. Landing back at the tower where it launched, to be refilled for the next flight is the goal. Starship prototypes, landing offshore Australia, in the water, to be towed to shore for study could happen soon enough.

Why mess around with drone ships, when you can launch sizeable mass from towers and recover using chopsticks

I've never accepted the concept of catching boosters & starship mid air as the risks, and you only need one catastrophe, far outweigh the increased costs.
As legs are needed for landing off world the development cost of designing & engineering legs is already accounted for.
Sometimes I think the full potential development marketing promo's may have a degree of ambit in them to fully allow for a more realistic & successful achievement goal.

Why all of your videos just feel like copy paste?

We needed both, landing leg 🦵 and chopstick ❤❤😂😊🙏.

Yes. Australia is a perfect location ❤

Chopsticks is very risky if you consider the entire area infrastructure. Build 1 mile out, use 4 towers connected with I beams. Run 8 heavy cable in a tic tac toe pattern. When the time is right make the center square smaller to catch based on position.

It's a very good idea to have the Starship and Booster land like this, thank you very much

Enjoyed the video. It has always seemed odd that Space X would attempt catching the starship before perfecting the landing on drone ships or even on land. One mishap and the FAA will appropriately shut them down for at least 6 months and probably more. Given that landing legs are necessary for Lunar and Mars missions, why not start with the less risky approach then add the Mechazilla catching maneuver.?

THE DRONE SHIP IS DOPE. THE TOWER AN AMAZING IDEA. LETS THE ADVENTURE BEGINS & MAKE IT HAPPEN.😘 🤩🤩🤩✨️🖤✨️

I believe that spacex will absolutely need landing legs for very specific needs(ie moon or mars), But the mass addition of the landing legs would significantly impact payload to orbit.

Good Morning, Kev. Would the base of the present drone ship base be stable enough to handle the starship? It seem to me to be to tall. Top heavy. Great update. Have a Great Sunday, Kev.

Agreed upon alternative landing locations if the situation requires another location.

These orbital earth transfers and possible locations have been discussed and planned for decades before SpaceX was incorporated. The earth doesn’t change locations, but bringing reality to these dreams is marvelous.

I agree with the oil rig set up. Seems the safest, to be honest.. I live in Texas. From Houston. I've seen some huge offshore oil rig platforms being made from start to finish. They are without a doubt a marvel in ocean going platforms. They can handle anything SpaceX can throw at them..

I will never bet against Elon, because, as he says, “We make the impossible late.” But next time he calls me for advice, I’ll implore him to get really, really good at landing that booster in a precise manner before he tries to catch it. And I’m also a fan of fitting Starship with legs and landing at sea. Thanks for a great report.

Just a thought. But while building the drone ship, why don’t they add a portable tankers along with the catch arms?

I think having landing legs and being able to land on/in a greater variety of places is a fantastic idea, although the extra weight would be worth it.

Spacex understood the realistic posibillities of catching the booster and starship after last month tests with the megazilla arms and choose for option b. Wise descision.
