"Which never took off" tells the whole story.

Delta Clipper was the way to go. Nasa really screwed up on that one. The Agena Rocket motor was Legendary for its dependability and they're still being used today.

NASA in the 1980 onwards: “No that’s too cheap and will work we should go with the expensive failure instead”

You got my attention when you mentioned NASA refusing to make a 50-million-dollar fix on one spacecraft, then sinking almost a billion into a spaceplane that never took off.

Finally, somebody remembered DC-X!
BTW, X33 was also abandoned when 95% finished, with only remaining problems with composite fuel tanks.

I was there at White Sands several times when the Delta Clipper flew. I was there, and Col. John P. Stapp was standing behind me when the side of the craft blew off, and it still safely landed itself! In 18 months McDonnell Douglas went from a blank computer screen to flying hardware! Damn it, I saw it with my own eyes, the NASA, or the Nation Against Space Advancement,

I feel like that 20 year shift in the technology put us in a wildly different place

We should give NASA a bigger budget than the army just for one year. I wonder how much progress will be done

Video Correction:
The cause was one of the four landing gear struts had not been connected. The open line failed to support the strut causing the DC-XA to tip over and then explode.

What people don’t realize is like everywhere else NASA is giant bureaucracy with huge dose of not from here. It’s only very recently they have been forced consider launch vehicles not developed there because there is no budget to develop their own anymore.
