I soloed back in 1983 after six hours under Part 141. My instructor was a middle-aged gentleman. When I returned he was waiting with a pair of scissors. While cutting my shirt he was commenting about my flight. His voice sounded somewhat emotional. When I asked him why such emotions, he said it is like a mother bird watching her offspring fly for the first time. He said it is a mixture of pride and loss. He was a Part 141 hardnose instructor - reminded me of my DI in the military - but a true gentleman and professional.

I flew my first solo this morning. All of these points are exactly correct. However, none of these points will be understood until you start the solo.

BTW, my landings were much better when I was by myself!
