Why YOU Should Drive a Manual Car or Stick Shift

Driving a manual car is something that is easy to learn but hard to master which makes it the some of the most fun you can have whilst driving cars around the world. There are endless reasons to pick a manual or stick shift gearbox over an automatic, but here are a few of my own reasons why I think you should!

i have ADHD and bought a manual specially because it keeps me paying attention to what i'm doing, especially if i'm in less than optimal mental conditions like driving to work just after waking up, or driving home tired after work. also scenarios not involving work but just being more keyed in to what's going on with my car. apparently i'm not the only one who's does this, and there's even been studies that show evidence of these benefits. driving automatics feels so weird now. my bicycle, dirtbike and honda fit are all manual. my parents' van and truck feel like weird kiddy toys without a clutch and stick.

Easy to learn and difficult to master, very true words. My 15 year daughter has learned how to drive our manual vehicle, bought specifically for that reason, but she is no master. After being without a daily driver for nearly 14 years, I stepped into one a year and a half ago and it was like yesterday I had stopped driving them. I don't know what it is, but there is a beauty to driving a manual. All of what you said is accurate, surprised that so much of the rest of the world still drives manuals, we here in America are such sissies, good grief. We are down to 1.1% of new cars made are manuals, how sad. Love the video.

the thing that blows my mind that you have two different licenses. in america you just get your drivers license and bam. all cars are allowed.
its also actually REALLY hard to find a manual in america.

I had an instructor that recommended I go for an Automatic because I was a very anxious driver and going through a rough period in my life. I took his advice and got an automatic car that I drove for a while with a family member but after failing 2 tests on my auto car. I started to get lessons and I was offered to drive a Manual and I actually found that I prefer it. I regret taking my driving instructors word that I could not drive a manual and while I like my auto car I might sell it when I pass. There is no shame in driving auto but do not make my mistake and let people tell you can not drive a manual.

I’m taking refresher lessons in a manual but I can’t WAIT to get an auto. Just don’t care about cars or driving ‘fun’ - just want to have less to think about. Automatics are like glorified dodgems and I bloody love it!

Good to see you continuing to upload and publish, sir. Finally got my new wheels back from the garage from an accident a month ago so will be spending this month in a second honeymoon period. While the 16 plate 308 was a rather nice courtesy car, your videos made me want to hop right back into my Ibiza immediately. ;-)

When i first started driving, i had an automatic family car that was super boring to drive. When it finally came time to buy my own, i didnt hesitate to get a manual for pretty much all of the reasons you cited in the video. thanks for validating my purchase haha.

Hi, I know this video is basically more than a year old now, but eh

Coming from learning to drive on auto for basically all my learner logbook hours (I live in Australia), learning to drive manual properly really makes you a better driver, though the downside is that you basically need to relearn how to drive lol. In my experience, most people who only drive auto (including myself in the past) are really bad at braking smoothly, ie they wait until the latest possible moment to brake. Because you're not preoccupied by shifting gears and clutch control, you don't need to worry about how you're going to stall the car or how you might end up lugging the engine if you don't downshift to 2nd or 3rd for a roundabout. While in an auto you won't be crying about how you need to baby your clutch in traffic, it still hurts to see your passenger lurch forward because your braking sucks. =p

Driving manual also forces you to anticipate the actions of others and traffic lights, especially with hill starts included. There's also the stuff about taking precautions to ensure you're preserving the clutch as much as possible in traffic, so that definitely makes one more aware of their surroundings as well.
Also, because I've finally learned to drive manual, I now know how to use tiptronic and paddle shifters. xD
Would still prefer the stick shift any day though

I drive a manual car like litterally everyone else i know, I brought it when i was learning as i was determined not to have the limitatons of an automatic license. I really struggeled with learning and even i passed in the manual in the end. I guess i might look at an auto when it comes time for me to get a new car, however i would worry about what people would think of me ahah and i guess there isnt too much choice.

I can understand the leg aching bit after having a stage 3 racing clutch which is heavy as a bitch, but unless you have a racing clutch; you're completely fine!

I like the fact that you don't need to get a special manual licence in america, I drive a manual 96 civic, yet I took the test on an automatic.

As always, great videos! Such a familiar environment saying I own an Ibiza, also! Would be interesting to do a Petrol vs. Diesel shootout between the two to see how they compare and would make an interesting video for those in that dilemma (The 1.9TDi really is an awesome engine in these, even the slowest version still is pretty brisk, VW really do know how to make some good engines)!

The aching foot with a manual is REAL but it has nothing to do with the clutch itself. Most people getting aches have their seat too far in front, so when they let out the clutch the tip of their foot tilts upwards to an unnatural degree and muscles start to cramp. Just set your seat further back to take the stress off of your foot.

In the UK we have two driving tesst, one for manual which means you can drive any car, the other for automatics which restricts you to auto boxes, the average cost of learning is around £1500 for either test so most people opt for manual.
