10 Things You Should Never Do To Your Car (Never Ever!)

What things you should avoid while driving. Today’s cars are also packed with plenty of safety features like airbags, anti-lock braking systems, traction control, and shatterproof glass. However, despite your car’s sophisticated safety features or computer system, you could find yourself in a tricky situation at the worst possible time. And it’s still a good idea to avoid doing certain things.

TIMESTAMPS:
Don’t press the “Off” button while driving 0:58
Don’t select “reverse” while driving 1:50
Don’t select “park” while driving 2:26
Don’t attach too many keys to the ignition key 2:54
Don’t forget to change your car’s oil 3:35
Don’t overfill the engine oil 4:27
Don’t wait until the fuel tank is empty 5:05
Don’t ignore warning indicators 5:45
Don’t forget to check your tire pressure 6:31
Don’t forget to balance your tires 7:14

SUMMARY:
- Some cars might require you to press the button for 3 seconds or more to shut it down. This is a safety feature in case you have a problem with your accelerator or brakes.
- If your car has cameras and a screen on the deck, the rear-facing camera might come on, or parking aids might become available, but the car won’t back up all of a sudden or come to a stop.
- If you shift to park while driving, your car might make an awful grinding noise and continue driving. Your car probably won’t suffer damage if you accidentally do this once.
- Gravity is still at work when you put your car keys into the ignition. During car rides, bumps and potholes will cause these heavy keys to pull and pull on the ignition until it wears out the tumblers.
- If you don’t change your oil, your car will run less efficiently. It will also stop lubricating the engine components, causing wear and tear. If the mechanical components continue to grind on each other, the car might become inoperable.
- The engine oil always comes with a dipstick, which has a mark to indicate the level the oil needs to be filled to. Fill it to this level and not to the top as if it were a bottle.
- Signs that your car’s catalytic converter has been damaged are that your car won’t accelerate when you press the pedal, your car’s fuel emission will drop suddenly, or your car won’t start.
- A good rule of thumb is that if you see a warning light on the dashboard, call or bring it to a mechanic as soon as possible.
- Checking your tire pressure is a good practice that often falls by the wayside. It’s even more important to do it when you’re headed out on a road trip or if your daily commute is over 30 minutes.
- If the tires are out of balance, you don’t have full control of your car, and your tires will wear unevenly.

Definitly another thing to avoid: STOP LOOKING AT YOU PHONE WHILE DRIVING.

Here's another very common mistake. I learned this one 30 yrs ago from my cousin who is a mechanic. Most people, when parking, put their car in park and then set the parking brake. When you take your foot off the brake pedal, you will notice the car will move a little before it stops. This puts tension on the Transmission gears and shift lever. Over time, you could run the risk of not being able to shift out of park.
Instead, put the car in Neutral, set the parking brake. Take foot off brake pedal. Once the car comes to a complete stop, then put it into Park.

When you turn on your engine, leave it running for 30 seconds to a minute before driving.

#9 Tire Pressure: Pretty much any modern car has a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS. These are special detectors installed in with your tires and will trigger a low tire light on the dash. Just don't ignore the warning. If it keeps coming back on after adding air to your tires, there may be a slow leak in at least one of them.

I have a recurring calender event in my phone, titled *"Check car"*
I have it set on the first of every month. In the notes section I write the miles _(ok, KM's here in Europe)_
I also check the oil and other fluids.

Using the calendar app in a smartphone is very handy.

The tip about the weight of the keys is a good tip but my dad has been driving with like 10 pounds of keys and it never caused any problems over the years

Don't forget to put your gas cap back. A loose or missing gas cap will cause the 'check engine' light to come on. If you take your car to a reputable mechanic, he'll put one on and send you on your way; but a non-reputable mechanic may charge you hundreds of dollars for a $15 gas cap.

A tip, don't drive with your hand resting on the gear stick, like the keys tip, it wears the gear stick mechanism making it harder to change gear over time.

Please make video on old, retro cars. Too much electronics with newer cars which makes you depend on services. That's why I love old timers. When driving an older vehicle like we have in family, it is best if the driver has mechanical skills. Even better would be a mechanic with driving skills! Our car can be started without battery. Most of the things can be fixed with insulating tape and a piece of wire. Leaks under the car is a good sign, usually when the old timer does not leak it means nothing is left in a car. Old timer gives problems but it never fails, new cars won't give you any problems but they fail you in worse possible moment. Sometimes we ended driving old car with two cylinders, sometimes with no light but we always made it home. The only problem is to find car service who still remembers how to operate with a wrench and hammer. When we bring this car to service they beg us to send for a priest, to say -dust to dust to this car. My Grandpa tell them no way, guys, this car has been on the road for over 50 years and will be for another 50.

All of these things rely on one thing... they assume your transmission is electronically controlled. Older automatics (such as those made prior to about the late 80's) were mostly mechanical so some of these features may not be present, such as mechanisms to prevent you from going from drive to reverse while driving. Modern transmissions will prevent this because all commands go through a computer before being executed, and the car/power train computer will prevent some of these things from happening, but if you do this in an older automatic transmission it may very well let you do some of these things.

Driving a car on empty will also destroy the fuel pump.
