It's the willingness to be bamboozled that still perplexes me. They have somehow convinced themselves this is not a scam and is a legitimate strategy.

But the scammer didn't even really try.

Imagine getting a phone call from an unknown number, answering it, and the person on the other side just says :

" This is a scam. Send me $1000."

And you do without question. That's essentially what happened here.
