I’m going to send this video to everybody who asks what DnD is. This is actually a good explanation of it.

As a dungeon master this is like the perfect Swiss Army knife for session zero, could’ve saved me so much time of explanation

Got me 5yo niece interested in DnD by telling her that there are dragons named after colors and that she can be a cat witch

I'm so down for this to be a series. Giving brief overviews for a bunch of rulings would be helpful as I tend to forget and jumble up how some of the mechanics work from time to time. Great stuff!

It’s a storytelling toolkit. The “Dungeon Master” is the author to a book while the players are the main characters in that book.

For me, D&D was never about huddling around a table in the basement.
Our table was in the partially finished attic.

Sounds about right lol
That's a really great summary, and an eccilent way of explaining it to someone who doesn't know D&D! DEFINITLY keeping it mind for interested potential players!

Genuinely the best summary I’ve ever heard. I think it would be cool to do a short duke-ified quickstart overview type thing, basic rules, how to make a character, etc. so many people are thrown off of D&D because of complex rules and generally not knowing, but if that was made open…

Finally someone who explains in the simplest way possible for my very dyslexic brain thank you so so much

I recently had to explain how D&D is not satanic. Broke it down into its elements (story telling, boardgame dice play, and roleplay.) Asked "do you like fictional stories? Nothing evil about that. Do you play dice games? Monopoly? Nothing evil about that. Growing up girls play with dolls boys action figures and vice versa. They give the figures a voice. That's roleplay. Nothing evil there." One person was interested in what I had to say two others were set in their minds.

A few years ago, I got into D&D, and convinced a few friends to join me. It's now become a weekly tradition every Sunday night. Over the years, I have been able to make other friends through D&D and they've also joined D&D night. It's the one night per week where People can enter a new world, make jokes, and have fun.

This was an excellent video. Whenever I have been asked to describe D&D or any other TTRPG I have described it as interactive storytelling with the DM or game master being the author of the plot as well as the controller of the side characters and antagonist. The players are the protagonists with the end goal of everyone having a good time.

This is easily the best summary of what the game is I’ve ever seen. Although I do hope there’s one side video in this series down the road explaining that DnD isn’t the only TTRPG out there - too many people (mostly those who don’t know any better) just use DnD to refer to all TTRPGs and I’ve seen some particularly ignorant posts where someone described stuff that happened in a Call of Cthulhu campaign only to be barraged with replies from people who somehow thought it was a DnD module and not a whole different game system with its own mechanics.

Not saying you need to do a deep dive on all of it, maybe just pointing out that other systems are out there and that while their mechanics and such may differ, the core of improvised play and such is still there while throwing out a few examples (which my personal choices would be Traveller [it’s nearly as old as DnD and still going strong], Cyberpunk Red, Eclipse Phase, Call of Cthulhu and/or ICON).

Okay but how did you manage to describe it without it sounding super hard to understand, you truly are a wizard

This is such a good clear, concise, and approachable explanation of the idea of D&D, and TTRPG in general, really. Very well said! ^v^
